Stupid DS-404 question

I'm pretty sure this is an obvious question with an obvious answer, but I'm going to ask it anyway (with my new tin foil, flame retardant hat on )

All them purty multi-samples that are on the Computer Music CDs each month - are they easily converted into .404 files? If they are, then I should be safe in assuming that the various tutorials in recent CMs concerning DS-404 will show me the way...

I'm at work at the moment, so I can't run around the flat and find my back copies of the magazine, so hopefully someone will take pity on me and show me the light

Well, sure, but how easily it can be done depends on the samples themselves. Many of the multisamples include pitch information, loop points, etc. embedded into them (including my own Electronic Garden samples). This makes it fairly easy work to load 'em up and map them out. Thanks to Dave's thoughtful programming, root notes will automatically be assigned, and in many cases the appropriate loop playback style will be assigned. There are a number of tutorials on the CM site, so you needn't go home to find out how to do it...

To summarise, DS404 works like this.

1. You load samples into the Sample List, which is like a "pool" of all wave data
2. If the samples don't already have them, use the Sample Editor to set the root note information (the original pitch the sample was recorded at) and any loop points or loop modes that you need.
3. Go into the keymap editor and create Keyzones for your samples. This tells DS404 which sample to play when you hit a particular key
4. Assign the keymap to a synth patch, and tweak the synth controls to make the sound respond to velocity etc.
5. Save the patch as a 404 file.

Thanks a bunch, Scot and Dave. I still haven't had a chance to try it out yet (stupid work and life keep getting in the way ). If I experience any problems I'll pop my head back in and ask for the "Really Big Idiot's Guide to DS-404"

The manual is definately recommended reading. Does my ulcers no good at all if I have to tell people about stuff that's already in there over and over
