Ensoniq DP4 - wow this thing is a great multiFX unit!

If you don't mind the noise. It was once my pride and joy but I fired it up a few years ago and couldn't believe the noise it blasted into the system. Made me realise how bad my old mixer must have been that I never really noticed.

If the problem is early reflections, the room can destroy the data from the nearfields in the time and freq domains. Nearfields aren't just big headphones. Room acoustics still affect them, even if you're listening in the sweet spot.

Consider bass waves that don't actually fit in the space between the speaker and your head. And consider reflections that make it all the way back to your head.

and that's why people put bass traps into their rooms...it's to minimize the effect of the standing waves, to absorb the energy....bass waves aren't little "trains" that pass by, resonant frequencies stand and build based on the dimentions of the space, the reflective quality of the walls, etc... hence the term "standing", waves can be very large, that's why as you move around a room you can hear certain frequencies louder/softer because of phase canceling/enhancing.....if it's not too loud the effect is minimal...but the louder they go, the more the room has effect...you would still want to achieve the most neutral sound, especially in the "sweet spot" as possible...throw a sub in there and without consideration of the room acoustics, you can run into serious problems...

Nearfield monitoring may make the space less important, but outside of the aforementioned anechoic chamber, the space will always have a noticeable effect on monitoring. This is just simple science. For a more in depth discussion of this (plus links to some really helpful software), I suggest you check out the Bruce Swedien threadover at harmony central. They have an ongoing discussion of the issues that arise when recording/mixing in less-than-acoustically-perfect spaces.[/url]
