Im looking for a sound...

sort of like an old radio sound, or off a record...

for vocals, female vocals..

heres a sample:

lo fi help

i know i can do stuff like a telephone-ish filter.. and yes, turn down some of the stuff in vinyl -- to not sound as record-y ... but does anyone have any cool lo-fi tricks?

Have you tried convolution? There are many old ribbon mic impulses available, at least with many of the commercial convolution engines.

Otherwise, try hunting the specs of some old mics down and setting up an EQ to match the frequency responses, which mostly would be something like nothing below 200Hz and nothing above 7000Hz, maybe some notches along the way. Then, maybe check out TriTone Digital's Color Tone. It has some classic desk impulses in it, might get you some familiar sounds and it has an interesting way of compressing sound.

Maybe add a bit of distortion (or a limiter that does it by clipping, which is the same) but I think Vinyl already does that...
