of course, there are supposed 'correct' and 'incorrect' ways to do anything musical, but i found it suits perfectly where it is in my chain, taking it out just doesnt sound right, and i am of the school of 'if it sounds right, it is right'jmh wrote:The correct position for BBE would be outside the signal chain - especially the master channel. Might do something for individual elements. Taste thing and all that, it's not to my taste. Just as this opinion isn't probably to anyone's taste.

Yes. As a first time web designer I would agree that "if it looks good it looks good". Here come my pink and magenta all over the place! wohoo!

IMHO that you should place the BBE in the bin where it belongs. Sorry, but I've never felt more stupid paying money for a plugin that (to me) does nothing but provide an initial "wow!" effect - until you realise on listening closely that the original signal has been significantly degraded. Just my opinion...

I would never use any kind of exciter in the mastering chain, unless the mix is FUBAR.
If you need exciting on your master you should go back to mixing.

I know lots of guitarists who use the Sonic Maximizer through their amp's effects loop. Who said the SM was only for mastering?
Excuse all the blood.

I don't think anyone could argue with that logic.bleebsen wrote: If you need exciting on your master you should go back to mixing.

I love music...there is no right way, just the right way for you (not as in attacking you)

exactly why I would dither first, dynamic processing can also have the potential fix those little artifacts...that was my logic...exactly opposite of yours...but seems too me to be six of one, half dozen of the other...I wouldn't dither the mix and then do any mastering - dithering adds (admittedly only small amounts of) noise, so any compression, limiting etc has the potential to increase that to noticeable levels. And if you're going to send out for mastering, they're going to prefer 32 or 24bit masters to 16bit if they have the choice.

i personally like popping on some exciters on ozone on some tracks here and there and yeah sure a bit on the master, why not?
just put in what you want. All this "i want to sound pro" stuff sucks, just learn techniques and experiment with what you have, and you will find your niche.

So you go back, get the best mix possible, and then add your enhancer of choice over the top to make it even better. If you need exciting on your master you should go back to mixing.

The Spectralive has much more tweaking possibilities, IMO.
But I guess it needs some nice plugs to enhance the dynamics from it also.

using as the last instance - I have some reservations:
1 bbe doesn't brickwall the peaks under 0dB; to keep it under that level turn down the material which reduces the overall perceived and actual volume
2 bbe increasxes bit depth of sound to at least 24, so it does take at least a ditherer afetrwards
B
thanks guys for the alternatives of bbe. I'll try them

A good one.
The new (and free!) CLAS plugin by refinedaudiometrics is excellent by the way. That I don't hesitate to put in master chain, or in good spots in the mix. Works like a charm.
But then, I'm talking about 96khz...
