Hi, I was directed here by homerecording.com. What I'd like to do is add some drums to some tracks I already have recorded. I have Tracktion 1 and Sony Acid Pro already, and would prefer not to purchase additional software if at all possible...

So I guess what I am asking for is a soft sampler to use the samples I already have (NSKitFree) that will allow me to assign samples to velocity ranges. And then someone to guide me through how to actually do that. I'm sorry this is all at once, but I'm really in a bind and I don't know where to even start! Thanks a lot!

I think NSKitFree comes as a sf2 too. You can use RGC's sfz (free sounsfond and sfz files player).

Thank you galwaypark for the llink. I am seeing the samplers/sample players, and they are VST plug-ins? How am I supposed to track the drums? I know that I have different velocity samples... I'm sorry, I need more direction.

Ahh, I see.
Well, VST plug-ins means that you have to use them inside a host / sequencer. You insert them into the channels of your host, and use midi (keyboard, if you've got one, or a piano roll inside the host) to control, draw or play the notes that trigger the specific drum sounds.

But this is a far biggger topic, try the newbie page on this forum for some guidelines for your first steps in the wonderful world of VST-i's and sequencing.

Also, some of these plugins will let you assign samples to velocity, while others (most soundfont players, for instance) won't.
But NS-kit already has everything pre-assigned for you, so I guess a simple Sf-player will do fine.

I know I'm starting to sound a bit like a broken record here (a broken snare?)

But -- You could spend $38 (I know, you want free, but, c'mon, it's only $38....) and get the DK+ drum sampler, which already has a free downloadable velocity mapping for NSKit samples, as well as a lot of other free drum kits, built-in patterns and the ability to program your own patterns. It'll help you with the learning curve if you're new to this whole Drum VSTi thing, as well as being an excellent program in its own right. It's inexpensive and much more powerful than the freebies.
