I downloaded some sound fonts from http://www.thesoundsite.net that were the compresed versions thinken I could save somtime not downloading the ones twice that size (70 some megs) they came in sfpack files and I unpacked them with a utility on the site and turned them into regular sf2 files BUT when I goto play them in any sound font player from cubase sx I have (free ones)... it gives me an error that it can't open it... and even the smaller one meg sound fonts won't open... should I have downloaded the uncompressed ones, or what's going on ??
Any help is much appreciated

Maybe there's nothing wrong with the decompression, can you explain what player you are using? Have you tried a different host? Some free SF2s are allegedly a bit cranky anyway
BTW I always use a download program that will retry for me at thesoundsite and I never get a packed sf2 if I can help it.

Sfplay and esef are both synthedit soundfont players, which can be a bit allergic to some soundfonts. (They're still great VSTis though.) You could try opening the soundfonts in a non-synthedit soundfont player (free options: Crystal or the Kontakt demo) to make sure the problem is with the fonts, not the player.

You could also try opening them in VSampler3-It does a good job with soundfonts. Can't save until the release version comes out,but at least you'd know whether it's the soundfonts or the player that's at fault.

Try to use Vienna2.3 Soundfont Studio ! You can download this prog here :
http://www.freewebs.com/dorumalaia/links.htm
Here you can download and Sfark and sfPack ( both are archivers for sf2 and need to decompress soundfonts !).
And here you can find and many links to thousands of free sf2 !

I was wondering if the file that was having trouble at the top of the thread had fully decompressed. A quick way to find out was by asking for the file extension ie .doc .txt

IMPORTANT
PLEASE READ
the .sf2 files from www.thesoundsite.net use a naming convention that includes a comma [,] in the filename
this is a known issue that will cause the synthedit soundfont manager [ as used in esef and twinsef ] to crash
just decompress your soundfont and then simply rename it without using commas to fix the problem
simple eh ???
you have NO IDEA how long it took to track that problem down at my end [ thanks jeff

Which SF2s are you talking about Rob?
I've been downloading from soundsite for years and I don't have this problem, or any commas I can see.
