Vocoder as "autotuner"

I tried using a vocoder with MIDI on a vocal track for pitch correction purpuses and for an effect.
It worked well with Cubases vocoder but the sound of that vocoder is terrible. I also tried Orange vocoder and it wouldnt glide between the notes. Obviously it will never sound like anything other than an effect but I'm looking for something more transparent sounding. I couldnt get get Auto-tune to work with MIDI but it doesnt really function like a vocoder so it wouldnt fulfill my needs. Does anyone have some more experience about this?

Why would you try using Auto-tune with MIDI? I'd suggest reading the manual (if you even have one); it's got a graphical editor where you draw in the correct notes!!
Also, you can autotune things manually in things like Cubase or Pro Tools. Or you could try Melodyne- i prefer it over auto-tune, it's easier to use and has heaps more applications.

On that purpose, the only thing i can suggest by my side would a mixing work between your voice take and your vocodized track quite behind (i assume that you've made an "audio to midi" kind of work for your vocoder before ) in wish you may try some discreet pitch adjudments
But i don't think it will really satisfy you
As just said, you'd better try a more appropriate application

I have an idea what you want to do, and it's called either TC helicon (there are several models) or an old-ish steinberg plugin called voicemachine.
I'm not sure why voicemachine isn't developed any further as it's such a useful plugin. (it's heavily outdated nowadays)

Well it seems like a waste of time when I already transcribed the melody and made a MIDI track of the intended notes. Especially since I already know that I don't like the way auto tune sounds in any mode.hoffy wrote:Why would you try using Auto-tune with MIDI? That why I'm looking for a vocoder that's as transparent as possible instead.

Well perhaps transparent wasnt the best word to use here. Something better than Orange vcoder for my purpouses atlest.funkadil wrote:What do you mean by transparent? Real-sounding?

Idea !
- Is it possible then to pick some waveform up from inside this voice take and choose them as carrier waves ?
- would it make sense if the vocoder allow it ?

ErrrH..
MAybe this is a little off-topic,
but does anyone know a good free vocoder plugin ?
The ones i tried were cpu hogs or not very good...
I know Evm vocoder, voctopus, RZvocoder....
At firt ear, it sounded like a vocoder, but the sound then wasn't very nice....

You could give Vokator a try. With its 1024 band FFT it can be very "transparent".
Might be a bit overwhelming in its functionality though, and has a far from intuitive user interface.

...can VOCATOR do something like this ?

of course you could pick the wavefrom in a sample editor, load it into a sampler (as looped waveform) and then use the sampler output as carrier. but i don't think that this would make much sense - the waveform of the voice already contains the vocal formants of the particular vocal where the waveform is taken from. whereas in vocoding we usually want some "neutral" broadband signal as carrier (neutral in the sense, that it doesn't have it's own strong formants)Krakatau wrote:(- Is it possible then to pick some waveform up from inside this voice take and choose them as carrier waves ?meister eder wrote: You could give Vokator a try.
