well if you know what youre doing, you can use a vocoder like space boy... create a second instance of the carrier track to 'carve' a space out of with an inversion of the product of the original vocoded carrier and modulator. you essentially keep what the vocoding process discards, and it has a nice vocal shaped space ready for you to drop in your normal, unvocoded singer.

the levels are very tweakable in this type of process, so you can decide how much space you want to make in your music track... to get it to fully work however would require that you compensate for any delays that might be going on in the dsp process. your output has to be right on for cancellation to work.

you might check out voxengo's gliss eq

Nothing does it quite the way that Space Boy does, so I think you'll be up shit creek if you're looking for something to compare it with, desafortunadamente. ;) Pero fortunadamente, there is Space Boy at least. :D

i think one could use ether vst and knockout vst in this process perhaps as well!

ether:

If both magnitude and phase are selected to be composited Ether works as a mixing
tool which adaptively equalises the two sounds to be combined and the effects can be
subtle.
If only one of magnitude or phase are selected to be composited the effect is
similar to that of a vocoder where some timbral characteristics of one sound are
imposed onto those of another sound.

(((and possibly play around with phase revert..)))
