Whatever host you prefer (there is no best), and yes.

*For me*, the combination of Logic and Live is great. Ymmv.

Logic definitely comes with everything you need to make music. And its well optimized.

Logic Pro 7 comes with Guitar Amp Pro, and the 7.1 upgrade also includes a Bass Amp simulator. Whilst not as good as Amplitube, or something of that ilk, they nevertheless do a decent job most of the time (especially after including EQ, reverb etc.)

Logic also includes many other plugins, including many EQ's, compressor, multi-band compressor, Linear Phase EQ, convolution reverb with library, and the usual limiters, distortions, chorus, flanger, stereo widening, filters and stuff. Logic also comes with many decent synths, Apple Loops, and a sampler with included library of common instruments.

Another vote for Logic 7. Garageband is surprisingly good for a freebie application, but I wouldn't rely on it as my sole host. The above mentioned combo of Logic and Live is killer.

Garageband kicks but! Take some time to get into it, if you've already got it. There are some good books available that would be worth reading, since the online manual is pretty brief. (That's where I'd be spending my money.)

The app comes with reasonable amplifier plugs, all the above mentioned delays, reverbs, chorus, etc to get started.

Computer Music mag comes with some good AU plugins, if the ones that come with GB2 don't satisfy.... I like CM Fuzz as an alternative amp simulator.
