Yes

It's how they control what works in PT. The idea is to make sure plug-ins are completely compatible, efficient, stable, etc. Kinda like the way Apple controlled its hardware set-up. You can't even make an RTAS plug-in without their permission.
A much less expensive way to go is to get the FXpansion VST2RTAS adapter, which wraps VSTs so that they look like RTAS plug-ins to PT.
Right now, I'm anxiously waiting for the adapter for PT7 to come out of beta.... If you're still running 6.9 or earlier, though, the adapter apparently works very well.
Take care,

Hmmmmm.... you got me curious. Looks like I was a bit wrong. Here: http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technot ... ugins/view
According to this, you can run RTAS in DP only if you have the Digidesign hardware. Maybe AudioDesk, too, not sure. Big expense there.
Wonder if there are any emulators out there that would convert?

Ack.
From www.macmusic.org -
AudioSuite and RTAS :
The native format of Audiosuite effects plug-ins launched by Digidesign uses an architecture of recalculation processing and uses the computing power of the computer to apply postpone effects on a sound file . This format is found in the following softwares: Audio Logic, Peak and of course Pro Tools. With the arrival of Pro Tools 5 this format evolved in real time format RTAS: Real Time AudioSuite.
...Soo, looks like it's Mac all the way, and maybe Digi hardware atttached as a requirement.
FXPansion answers the question about a RTAS2VST adapter by saying that they don't have a license to make one. Lord knows what sort of weird hacks and cracks might be out there, but I suspect it wouldn't be easy to do.
Take care,

I'm pretty sure the Avid Video app also supports RTAS(Windows and Mac),but not sure about Avid Free though.
