Is there a good instructionnal text around on how to use these, or anyone care to explain it to me in detail? Like, how many bands/what frequencies are ideal for what types of music.
Plus - what is a good inexpensive MBC for Mac? I'm trying to get to grips with C3, but it uses lots of CPU.

se the multiband comp chained with a good eq & aa accurate visualisation plugin : first you check the frequency range using your ears and your eyes, then you set your comp...how many bands/what frequencies are ideal for what types of music
Also : many comp have nice presets as sarting-points... just check them.
You can also take one preset on a multiband comp, and try to mimic the same settings on another, in order to see the difference of sound between them.
