i've been using ableton live for a long time, but as of recently (v5 actually) live's kind of unstable, freezes a lot, chokes and causes audio to stop and/or crackle even with a decent amount of tracks (10-12) and just a few vst fx plugins (no synths)
i'm getting more and more frustrated cus it kills my workflow having to wait for it to settle down when it goes ghey.
so i'm thinking of using cubase for a while, until live gets more stable and trust worthy.
so what i'm asking is how solid is sx 3? (3.0.2.623)
also, i'm open to other host suggestions with (really) powerful and intuitive audio editing. (comparable to live's)
thx

SX? You need 2.2 OR 3.1. You are playing with fire with any other version.
Er, IMHO of course.

HI
By the time you get comfortable with SX there will be an up-date to Live that brings back stability!
If you like Live so much why not use the previous stable version.
I can understand that new up-dates can bring problems; what I can't work out though is this: why does an application that was doing what you needed it to do all of a sudden in need of replacing (until current problems are ironed out?) - you then want to spend $500 on a new host that you have no idea on whether that will be stable, have to learn to use it and pay an arm and a leg to buy it.
Just go back a version in Live and get back the stability - doesn't that make sense?
Flipper.

i have sx 3.0.2.623 for free. my mum bought it for me for xmas. she saw that i was playing with it a few years ago and thought i might still want it. pretty sweet of her actually. and also, i know the basics of cubase. i think i made a track or 2 in it so it prolly won't be so long until i start being comfortable with it.original flipper wrote:you then want to spend $500 on a new host that you have no idea on whether that will be stable, have to learn to use it and pay an arm and a leg to buy it.
you think i haven't thought about this as well. the thing that keeps me from doing that is that i'll miss all the new/awsome features in 5. freeze, pdc, the improved browser, device groups...just from the top of my head... and it will feel like taking a step backwards...like once getting used to a chainsaw, having to go back to using an axe (maybe a stupid and exaggerated example)original flipper wrote:Just go back a version in Live and get back the stability - doesn't that make sense?
plus, the inplace editor, the play order thingy and the user definable workspaces in sx will surely improve it's workflow compared to previous versions.

You might want to visit www.cubase.net
This is where the Cubase forums live. I *think* that the upgrade to SX3.1.944 from SX3 was a freebie.

I'm running 3.0.2 etc. Haven't gone to 3.1 yet mostly because I'm very stable where I am. but now that people have been saying the upgrade is safe, I will do so.
The "my mom gave me a fee copy for xmas" is highly suspect, of course. We've seen it a million times. But giving you the benefit of the doubt for the moment, your current version should be fine--but then again you should already know that since you've already got the software.
Of course, let's hope your next post doesn't start with "I lost the dongle to the software my mom gave me for xmas. Does anyone know how to..."

I think you should give Cubase a go - remember: you can use ReWire to integrate Live into Cubase, so you could even marry what you know and don't know. Being familiar with both Live and Cubase would be very advantageous, and you can harness the best of both worlds, I would think.

I'm running Live 5 (unstable for me right now but there'll be 5.2 soon) and Cubase SL 3.1, Cubase's been rock-solid since the 3.1 upgrade (for me at least).

I like live a lot but i always saw it as program to be rewired into cubase.
the last time i tried it was on version 3, i had a good PC even for today standarts and after opening 3 amplitubes it was asking for merci, where cubase was just warming up, the previous SX3 was buggy and unstable as it could be but the last one and others before are cool.
I really curious about ACID6, ACID1 was my first music program and it´s nice to see some big time sequencers\multitrackers features on it.

what makes you think ableton live is ever going to be stable ? their at version 5 now it ain't stable yet version 6 is already in the pipeline so you'll pay money for version 6 then keep getting updates because it ain't stable until version 7 is released , it just goes on and on.even7 wrote:i've been using ableton live for a long time, but as of recently (v5 actually) live's kind of unstable, freezes a lot, chokes and causes audio to stop and/or crackle even with a decent amount of tracks (10-12) and just a few vst fx plugins (no synths)

I bought Ableton live 5 & cubase sx 3.
Cubase sx 3 is very stable , as for ableton i just use it as a toy on my laptop to show my friends 'hey look what this does' i'd never bother using it for producing as its just not as good as cubase for that task.

i'm very very very happy with SX3, for me it's very stable. no problems. most of my projects have a handful of mono audio tracks, a midi track triggering a sampler w/large multisample sets, a few vsti tracks, a handful of effectsl, and quite a bit of automation. I used to use ReWire in my projects a lot too, but don't anymore.
anyway all this has always worked just fine for me - couldn't really be much happier with it to be honest
