Neodynium from elemental audio has an attack that goes down to 20 micro secs. It also has an adjustable look ahead time and a built in limiter. May be worth a look for you also..

Edit: on checking though there is no variable knee so might not fit your needs here.
thanks buddy, yep I've tried it, its very good actually :D I will try it again to see if it could potentially be THE compressor for me

...but what IS "tracking" in the context of compressors? - i know terms like pitch tracking, partial tracking,...target tracking...but in compressors...?
I think you have misunderstood me, I'm talking about tracking, as in ... mixing tracks :) I'm simply referring to using the compressor / peak limiter over the tracks rather than the entire mix.

Sorry for the confusion

No probs :), its a compressor that grows on me the more I use it, bit of a one to learn but very versatile!

The only strange thing that I find with Neodynamin, is the release behaviour. It's quite different to most compressors, best place to hear it is on drums, it's not quite as smooth as I would like imho. I was just trying the compressor in the Trackplug 5 by Wavearts which is quite impressive actually. I'm not a big fan of the c/r protection though so I think I'll avoid it :)

I think look-ahead helps get an awesome smooth result on attacks. I have to look around for more that have a variable lookahead I think :)

Was interested in this so just did some A/Bs on a simple drum loop with Neodynium / Vanilla / Gran comp / Gene Comp and endorphin.

I can see what you mean about there being a certain characteristic to the release but to my ears the most transparent of them all, closely followed by Gene and Gran comp.

Anyhow if you are looking for something with more release control it may be worth having a look at Vanilla which has four modes. The attack goes to 0.1ms also but no lookahead control.. I think you can still get the alpha/beta for free if you haven`t tried it already..
