You're preferred method for adding analog warmth

My method for adding Vintage warmth is quite involved, but well worth it.
Firstly i leave some classic analogue synths out in the rain - a prophet 5, a Minimoog, etc.
I let them Rust for a few weeks.
Then i bake them in a vintage belling oven for 3 days, very low temp.
Then, i scrape off the rust into a pile, and coat some 1940's sellotape with it.
I then record my mix onto this exceptionally warm tape, then bounce it back into pro-tools.
N.B. be sure to use only the rust from true analogue synths - rust from say, a Virus will not sound the same AT ALL.

"Warmth" means a lot of things. It partially means EQ -- a bit bassy, perhaps with a clear high end, lacking in piercing mids. Often, it means a bit of a sagging, compressed feel. Slight inaccuracies of pitch are also important. And then there's a touch of low-order harmonic distortion, especially even-order.
It helps to begin with souds that have these characteristics. Good guitar sims, good samples, and vocalists who aren't classically trained -- Bel Canto is an Italian term that means "sing like a computer-driven sine wave, making every vowel sound the same."
As far as plugs go, I use a lot of the Classic series effects, especially the Compressor and Reverb, which helps a lot. BuzzMaxi beta 2 (the best of 'em all) gets a lot of use, too, especially on drums. Afer that, I'll put RubyTube or SweetyVST, perhaps a random Digitalfishphones plug, on the whole.
You don't need a lot; a little goes a long way. It's easy to turn a mix into sludge.

Like somebody said, there's not only the one stop solution of using the dedicated plugs (i personally use antares tube a lot, it can do a little compression, and a little boost preamp, and add some mild or severe overdrive) but you can use other tricks, like a bit of chorus, filtering, reamping your tracks, and that oftend does it for me.

Then there's also the classic Warmificus spell, to be featured in the last Harry Potter book when Harry starts a poser punk rock band, The Wankerers.
Well, now that he's out of school he has to do something for a living, right?
Watch the fun as Ron bites the heads of garden gnomes and Hermione becomes the idol of crew sluts and groupies everywhere!
Hmm, what do dropouts do in England, anyway?

I think I saw meffy's Silence Sampler VERY favorably reviewed in this month's Non-Sound on Sound but I can't talk about it.

PSP Vintagewarmer.
Other than that, I use Sonalksis EQ and Compressor and they add a bit of analog character as well.
Would like to try Colortone Pro, but as said, there is no PC version.

You could talk but it would be inaudible. Amazing, yet true! (Except it isn't; I lied.)mayan wrote:I think I saw meffy's Silence Sampler VERY favorably reviewed in this month's Non-Sound on Sound but I can't talk about it.
