I've been trying to see how fat I can get Reason sounding using only 1 Subtractor nestled inside a Combinator with some custom controls. I'm quite pleased with the results. A bit of delay & maybe one more Subtractor adding 2 more oscillators should beef this up nicely;

Bored already. Reason works for me as a very flexible softsynth, with semi-modular characteristics.Once it goes into Cubase even more fun begins. Used in a creative and lateral way it's as good a tool as any.

Nice skin too, Dogboy73
I just read through this thread from last year... and one thing that strikes me about this discussion is that I don't always want sounds to be "phat" anyway... a whole track consisting of phat sounds is unlikely to sound good. Within any mix you need some COmbinator-type sounds that are phat and/or nicely layered, with other sounds in the mix that are more transparent and easier to place.
Surely only an idiot judges a synth by the first few patches?

I just saw this thread, haven't read it all, but this is my advice. running reason in 96 khz is when it sonds best by far, due to its efficiency, theres no reason why you can't produce your tracks with it at 96 kHz. When rendering, render to 96 k and then downsample to 44.1 for CD using a high quality resampler, it sounds significantly better than rendering at 44.1 from Reason, ESPECIALLY the Subtractor synth. Cutting a little bit of the highs using a soft high shelf filter (such as the one on their mastering EQ) works wonders.
I love the Combinator, I love Reason a lot, I still can't find anything that is as complete. I mean, a program that has orchestral instruments (very good too), pianos, synths, a full set of loops, drum sounds AND effects. Neat
Not to mention Reason Drum Kits 2 which I just bought, which is AMAZING !
Cheers

Why anyone would pay the price for Reason and not be able to use vst / vsti's or record audio is beyond me. To each his own but for me Orion Platinum or FL Studio with Energy XT as a vsti simply blows Reason off the map (Energy XT being the Combinator Killer).

Excuse me, but that's very sillyTeksonik wrote:Why anyone would pay the price for Reason and not be able to use vst / vsti's or record audio is beyond me. Reason is not a host, it's a set of instruments, effects and samples. Following your arguement, why would anyone buy GigaStudio, Absynth or Waves effects... they don't record audio or host VSTs, so why buy them?

Silly analogy yours. I'm making a point on what set of tools and compositional power a certain amount of money will get you. For the price of Reason you can Purchase FL Studio or Orion Platinum plus Energy XT and have so much more power at your fingertips than Reason gives (and probably have some money left over-haven't checked street prices). Then with FL or Orion you have to factor in all the great freeware instruments and effects you can't use in Reason. The resulting package just makes the purchase of Reason a mystery to me,why anyone would pay more and get less is beyond logic. Then you still can't record audio with Reason so there's a whole other set of options you're missing with Reason. Yes there's Rewire but then that requires the purchase of more software and then Reason's Value for Money plummets even farther.headquest wrote:Excuse me, but that's very sillyTeksonik wrote:Why anyone would pay the price for Reason and not be able to use vst / vsti's or record audio is beyond me. It just doesn't make any sense at all to pay more for Reason and get less. You're missing out on all the great freeware or commercial megasynths that could add so much more to your music. Reason's supposed superior sound quality myth has been debunked and the cpu demand issue isn't even an issue anymore.
To each his own as I said before but if you enjoy getting less and paying more then party on.
