Voxengo Marquis Compressor beta 1.2.2

A new beta has been posted with a very interesting new feature.
"Sound" switch allows you to change the default Phasy sound mode to a phase-linear sound mode which does not affect phase response of the program material. This mode can be particularly useful for mastering applications. Phase-linear mode consumes roughly 15% more CPU resources in comparison to the "Phasy" mode.
NOTE: when changing this switch it may not update its state immediately which means your audio host can't switch between these modes automatically. In order for this change to take effect you should stop and start playback in your audio host.

I wondered the same but I am guessing maybe not because some of Voxengo's other plugins where the latency is altered (eg HarmoniEQ) need to be reloaded and the setting affects all instances. If Aleksey has got around that with Marquis - that would be really handy and might apply to HarmoniEQ etc in the future.soundpalace wrote:Aleksey, does this new mode introduce any additional latency ?
Edit: Actually just swapping back and forth between phasy and linear it does seem to affect the latency. Makes sense I guess since AFAIK all phase linear filters introduce latency - perhaps HarmoniEQ will be able to do this without reloading too.

yep it appears you're right, I too would LOVE to see this sort of implementation in HarmoniEQ, this will also mean that the parameter will be saved as part of the preset which is so important for the HarmoniEQ since the linear phase mode sounds totally different to the normal mode.egbert wrote:I wondered the same but I am guessing maybe not because some of Voxengo's other plugins where the latency is altered (eg HarmoniEQ) need to be reloaded and the setting affects all instances. Aleksey could you please add this to HarmoniEQ ? Maybe also to CurveEQ for the saturation delay control ?
As expected, the linear phase mode doesn't sound quite as good as the phasy mode, but its very nice to have the option. The phast mode sounds warmer and is much smoother on attacks it seems.

Marybelle, I thought that was not a cushion - that was a 'package'.
I.e. 'download software package'.
'Linear' sound mode does have more latency - 1536 samples. 'Phasy' mode has got 19 samples only.
Of course, if such approach works in most hosts (even if only via play/stop) I may take it for implementation in most applications demanding it. I'll wait for problem reports in the coming weeks and decide if it's usable.

That's good news Aleksey. The switch back and forth between the linear and phasy modes is working fine for me here in Cubase SX 3.1.1.Aleksey Vaneev wrote:Marybelle, I thought that was not a cushion - that was a 'package'.I.e. 'download software package'.

It is really handy to be able to try it out the other mode in your mix without messing things around so much.

Just tested the plugin. I quite like the new immediate mode change. Cubase SX3 compensates for the latecy immediately after playback restart. This system would do wonders with warmifier and harmoniEQ, too. I can't say how other hosts react to these kind of "realtime" latency changes though.
The linearphase mode sound? Well it seems like the usual trade off between phasy and linear. It's either good transients (phasy), or more coherent imaging and summing compatibility (linear).
By the way I stumbled on a really high-end "loudness contouring" with the two modes. Have two copies of the same tracks playing, with both channels having their own marquis. Set the other one to linear, and the other to phasy mode.
And if you get any kind of delay effect here, your host quite likely doesn't support realtime latency changes.
Thanks Aleksey.

In FL Studio 6 the change works fine as long as one presses stop an extra time (it resets all plugins). I've comment on the sound a bit later once I've tried it some more.
Cheers!

Odd.. FL Studio shows 19 Samples of latency when the button is set to "linear" and 1658 when it's in "phasey" mode. Are the modes mixed up or is FL Studio screwed?
EDIT: no, they seem to be correct. FL Studio is screwed.

Hmm yeah, you're right about that. I first tried the plugin in wavelab and it required a restart. Cubase seems ok with the realtime changes, althought it'll glitch momentarily when applying the new compensation buffers.Aleksey Vaneev wrote:Kingston, AFAIK Cubase SX3 should update latency 'on the fly', without having to restart playback - it supports the necessary VST call.

yep same behaviour here with Cubase SL3, works perfectly but of course, the audio drops out for a second so that the audio my be compensated as expected. I don't believe that I even had to restart playback.Kingston wrote:Hmm yeah, you're right about that. I first tried the plugin in wavelab and it required a restart.
