Host Latency issue?

I set up VSTHost last night with my external keyboard as a midi source. The system functions, but all instruments had an unacceptable delay. I adjusted the buffer size from approx 4000 to 100 and the latency was significantly better, but the audio has pops and crackles. The PC is a 3GHZ 1GB WINXP platform. The CPU meter is at 3% to 5%. I also shut off all of my virus checking. (I have Service Pack 2 on this system.)
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark

I notice VSTHost allows: "I/O through either Windows MME or ASIO drivers"
Are you using the Windows MME drivers or the ASIO ones?
I only tend to notice a distinct delay on midi keyboard when latency is higher than, say, 512 samples. Try increasing the latency a bit, as 100 might be a bit too low, especially if you're using something like ASIO4ALL and definately if you're using something like Windows MME.

I selected the MME drivers.
I never had a good trade off between Latency and audio problems. I tried the range of results and it seemed like I had to run around 4000 to minimize the audio problems. Even set to the 100 range the latency was not that great.
My reference is the audio generated by the keyboard's synth compared to the audio generated by the computer VSTi.

Well, I fear the Windows MME drivers may be letting you down. Sonar allows Windows MME and ASIO options, and on my system Windows MME is a complete non-starter, even with reasonably high latencies it's got more "snap, crackle and pop" than Rice Krispies.
What soundcard are you using? Is it the PC's own on-board soundcard? A seperate PCI or USB one?
Either way, I strongly recommend either obtaining ASIO drivers for your soundcard or, at the very least, investigating something like www.asio4all.com which offers low-latency support for most soundcards.
I doubt your PC itself will be the cause of any problems, as the spec seems fine.

I agree about MME. ASIO or WDM-KS is a must.Overview paper: http://centrance.com/about/tr/Latency.pdf (http://centrance.com/about/tr/Latency.pdf)
Info if you need an inexpensive (US$100) soundcard/audio interface
