Kingston wrote:I noticed that too. Also, especially on the fast runs it sometimes sounds like a moogish synth with portamento. Something with the attacks in the quick runs is missing. And also the portamento is a little bit unrealistic at times.

Maybe one more stage of that "crackle-y", sizzling sound simulation and some tweaks and more randomisation to portamento?
I notice that moogish sound especially just when I play a note. That's why I always have to fade in the expression for the attack of notes.

If you do some EQing (listen to the last demo I posted: http://www.gregjazz.com/upload/SSUpiece.mp3) you can get some good sizzle sound.
Tony Ostinato wrote: i thought about that a bit. i'm not sure if valves are being modeled and the throw of the valves, especially during fast runs, affects the feel of the tone by valving it off in between up and down positions. its very slight and subtle but i think maybe thats whats making those sections give it away.

theres no portamento, those are also fast fingered runs and thats where, since there are no tounged attacks on those notes, the valving sound might really come into play.
That's what's missing exactly!!! The valve sound. So when if you hold down another note and then "trill" with a note above, making use of the fact that Milestone has legato mode on (1 note of polyphony basically, so notes don't overlap), you should hear the valves switching. Perhaps if the valve movement was modelled -- so then you would also be able to do half-valve techniques (like you're doing in your demo with the real trumpet). Because when trumpet players play, the trumpet keys don't switch instantaneously.

Hope I'm understandable. Got too excited. :P

yo man are you still doing anything to that springline reverb? id love to know whats happening next there... also, is there a place where i can donate? do you have a collection of other DSP goodies?

..err
[quietly OT..]
My stuff is availble through BetaBugs.. The springline will see the light of day as a proper plug, but I have a couple of other projects to finish first..

My most recent toy was diodorant, which a forum search will find ;)

thx for the interest!

I imagine that when a note is bent (pitch) on a traditional acoustic instrument that some of the component harmonics do not bend along with the principals. In other words lets say you have a guitar and you bend the string. The string has "shrunk"... the pitch rises, but the resonating body of the guitar has not shrunk. Those resonances would continue to ring on for at least a moment. The hiss of air passing through a trumpet body might not change at all no matter what the pitch. It seems like most synthesized instruments sound like the sound is merely sped up or slowed down during a bend (like cranking up the speed on a tape). Any thoughts on this?

Beta 6:
http://www.gmlab.it/_temp/MilesTone_b6.zip

Date: Feb 06, 2006
- Improved the valve switching response (based on note on velocity and pressure)

This is "A night in Tunisia", played by a "cold" midifile without expression added:
http://www.soundfonts.it/store/MilesTone_b6_Tunisia.mp3

As it seems, it now reacts nicely even if you just play it like a synth :)
I think that better than this can't be done. Not that it's perfect, but as far as I can have understood, one can't pretend to perfectly simulate an istrument as dynamic and responsive as a trumpet.

So far this is just amazing work. AMAZING work! I'm impressed.

Absolutely amazing, to a non-trumpet-playing Miles nut like me. :D I can't wait to get this working in some jazzy stuff I put aside for...lack of a good trumpet.

Guido I ran out of words.
This is better then I thought possible.
Those fast runs sound great now.
How do you do it?
I mean you start with something, like many others, but then you make huge improvements really fast.
You must have a great combination of musical hearing and computer knowledge.
 BRAVO

By the way I started playing with version 5 yesterday morning, the next thing I know it was midnight.

FANTASTIC! Fantastic! Over and over Again!

Post

I don't whether to delete the old versions or keep hold of them for old time's sake.
I've gotta say (again) that this trumpet sounds much more like Diz than Miles.
Can't wait for a Sax Vst so you can do Bird's break in Night in Tunisia.

I redid the real trumpet vs model trumpet with beta6 tonight, again both are played live with no editing so its like it would sound on a gig.

Anyone want to give some playing and keyboard programing tips on how to get the most out of this? Fer instance how would I go about getting a cool Love "Alone Again Or" mariachi trumpet sound out of this, or something similar to the simple trumpet lead in Belle and Sebastian's "Judy and the Dream of Horses" or even something simpler like the mellow trumpet outro of Neutral Milk Hotel's "Communist Daughter."

I really know nothing about how you guys blow into these things in real life, and thus how I should be using the expression control and just playing the thing in general from just what notes to hit and how to hit them. What Tony and Guido have put together so far has floored me, and I just want to get a similar level of mileage out of this.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Post

hmm, that would be a good thing to do for tomorrow, upload a midi file of some herb alpert tune or something and you can look at the controller data and see what we're up to.
