Sample CD Format Bewilderment

I'm contemplating getting the Distorted Reality set from spectrasonics. I have Kontakt and shortcircuit...but I apparently have to decide whether I want the Roland format or the Akai format. In fact, while we're at it, I don't quite understand the difference between *.wav and audio format. Plus, I was checking out the "Twisted Textures" set and there's a choice between "audio" and "akai" - with the Akai being about $50 more. Why would one format be more expensive than another?
Beats me...I'm lost...can anyone provide a little guidance...
It was either here or the getting started forum...figured I'd come right to the source. Thanks!!

..."Audio-Format" usually means that these are normal Audio CDs, i.e. you have to rip the sounds tour HD, cut them, map them in your sampler and set the the loops. Such a task can be worth 50$, if someone else has done this for you...

Thanks!! So, for instance, the AKAI version of the sample sets would be the way to go for use with a soft-sampler like Kontakt or shortcircuit? I realize these programs have their own proprietary files so I'd be working from waves, I guess.

AKAI is probably the most common "convert from" format when using sample conversion tools - also most soft samplers have a direct import from it. Probably one of the smartest choices, other than raw WAV files with a set of .fxp files for your sampler.
Probably more expensive because the developer thinks he'll sell less in that format.

or it's like TDM plugins and they just boost the price because the people that use that format have more money? nah...

... the single wav-files will be saved on your HD while converting the Akai files to Kontakt. If you don't like this, you can always save the patches as "monolith" which will put the waves into the patch-file...

Another vote here for Akai format. Best supported format for translation into other formats. Roland tends to have some odd translations at times.
Stay away from Audio format if you're using a soft sampler.

...good point:

also very useful for ripping audio sample cds:

... you can also use either Recycle or Samplerobot, but I'd rather buy a disk with a sampler format, as it is a lot of work. Still haven't completely renamed the samples from this old BFA Freaky Jazzy Funky Audio-CD...
