Herodotus and I are working on the release of Endangered Rhythms volumes 1 and 2 in rex format. It should be a matter of only a few weeks.

I've never used rex files outside of Reason, and to be honest, I've never found Dr Rex to be anything to write home about. Also, I don't own Stylus RMX, the popular loop player. But I know from reading here that there is a great interest in the rex format, especially for use in Stylus. So, enlighten me please. What does Stylus do, and why do you prefer, if you do, to do it using rex vs ordinary wav files.? What else do people do with rex?

I'm opening this thread to a discussion of your loop use and beatslicing habits, methods and prefernces. I want to learn more about what folks do with loops so as to best serve you as our customers for both the Endangered Rhythms and Dangerous Grooves series.

ER is going to be released in Acid, rex and ST2, and will expnd to include at least two more volumes after Vol. 2 is released. Dangerous Grooves will be expanding in both content and formats throughout the year as well. Native Instruments formats will be added to both series, as soon as I am able to obtain Kontakt and or Intakt.

We are committed to the development of these two live-played beatloop series, and expanding their bounderies to include different instruments and formats. 2006 will see a major effort in loop development by Dangerous Bear, and your feedback is the most important element of that effort besides the perfomances themselves. That's because our bottom line is the user, his/her workflow and musical expression.

So, let's hear from you.

If you're talking about rex2 files for drumloops, I think it's a good idea. Using Shortcircuit, when a rex2 sample is loaded, the drumloop is presliced. You can play any section of the loop. Plus you can rearrange the slices if needed.

In a previous post, I noted that the drumsamples in Endangered Rhythms 1 were rhythmically correct but their sample lengths were not. If a loop was loaded and then another at the top of the next measure, you would see a gap between the two. For example, I think a 120bpm 4 beat sample would last exactly two seconds. If sampling at 44.1 K then the exact length in samples would be 2 x 44,100 or 88,200 samples (hope I'm doing the math right since I'm not looking at my software).

To me the correct sample length is important for: time correction, and use in samplers as rex2. If a loop is not sample correct and you play the loop, it will not be correct. And sometimes you may want to play the loop backwards and it won't sound right. I've noticed most rex2 samples are longer than needed. But for drumloops, if you think about it, the best thing would be the perfect length.

I could manually correct the ER loops but it's alot of work. You would have better functionality and perhaps sales if this was corrected. BTW, the rhythms are great...

I like it experimental. When I'm in stylus, I put it on groove menu and go for the Immediate Trigger Mode...That way I can play the entire Right side of the browser like a keyboard. This sounds like a very exciting endeavor.
