Get the kit
HERE
In order to test out a band-mate's new Firepod, and to get some rough material written, we set up a basement recording session of sorts. Our drummer had a prior engagement, and had to leave. I get an idea, hit record, and captured some single-hits from his kit, just for fun.
Well, I listened to our basement recordings, and thought the recorded drum sound was actually pretty interesting, and pretty decent. I decided to see if I could cook up a usable kit from the one-shots, and I think I did just that, in .sfz format.
The mapping is close to GM, but not quite: I mostly just mapped it in a way that I felt was playable and comfortable to me. Not much weirdness: nothing to the left of the kicks, or to the right of the China. I hate drumkits that have all sorts of goodies secretly mapped four octaves above/below the rest of the kit
There aren't that many velocity layers, and occasionally only one. For the most part, the velocities are pretty intuitive: one special thing to note is that the open high-hat, at the high end of the velocity spectrum, is a VERY open hat that rings out. I was considering putting this on an entirely different key, but it ended up staying on A#. So, if you're not looking for that effect, don't go pounding on the key.
Simple enough, really. The kit is hard for me to describe: the recording doesn't sound really 'lo fi' or 'trashy' or what have you, but with only four mics and limited set-up time, this isn't going to be your replacement for BFD. It's unique, and does sound a bit "rough," for lack of a better term. I originally only intended to put it together out of boredom, but I was very pleasantly surprised with the results, and I figure that somebody, somewhere, can probably find a use for it. Even if not, it's fun to play around with, and we can never have too many drum samples, can we?
No license weirdness or anything, I played it, I recorded it, I mapped it, so if you want to use it somewhere, please do: that'd be pretty sweet.

Nice kit Jake! The snare's sweet. I had to play with the volumes and velocities (because it's sfz and I have to fiddle!) but the samples are really good! Thanks for sharing.
