Where Is Heaven? (edit 3) [spooky dirge]

thanks to dave mckenic's new sample collection, and the comp he's running, i was inspired to finally write something.
*EDIT 3*
some pan and effects changes.
Where Is Heaven?
my guess is that this would be classified as some sort of spooky dirge.
everything up to 0:48 is from the demo set of dave's fizz n chips library. the samples are played with liveslice and kontakt 2, and are processed through metallurgy and kontakt 2's effects. at 0:48, i bring in a psudo theremin sound from string theory and several samples from altered states. other effects used...R2 reverb, anarchyFX spectral autopan.

im glad you dig it. i really enjoyed writing it. im going to work on it some more this weekend and see if i can turn it into a full length track. it might be tricky to keep it from getting too boring/sleepy though as it gets longer. i'll have to experiment and see what i come up with.

You had quite a few tracks from your earlier period that I felt you should have returned to anew.
Maybe we're thinking of the same material.
If so, I really look forward alot. Matter of fact, I'm about to hit the road here so I'll just start the download so it's here for me in the morning when I get to work.
Ciao,

What's all this talk of a demo/competition? Suppose I better check out Dave's site...

love it! very fun and sounds great. if i ever make a Monstrum compilation cd, this would *have* to be in it. :-) i would think about varying the bass line ... it's the only part of the piece that feels in-organic to me because it just repeats. wouldn't take much to make it interesting.

check this thread too.polyslax wrote:What's all this talk of a demo/competition? Suppose I better check out Dave's site...
i've been wondering about that too. the only minor change in it is at the 1/2 mark, where it only revereses its order. on one hand, its plodding and repetitiveness kind of suits the track, but on the other hand it could also be grounding it too much and holding it back. also the more i listen to it, the less happy i am with the way the latter half's atmospheres transition in. i like it when its all there, but the way it comes in doesnt feel smooth enough. the ending isnt quite right either.rachmiel wrote:i would think about varying the bass line ... it's the only part of the piece that feels in-organic to me because it just repeats. wouldn't take much to make it interesting.

yes ... but if you vary it just slightly (which you've done already, so slightly that i didn't even hear it!) but audibly it might add a layer of interest to the track that afficionados would appreciate? i'm hearing your reverse idea, but more audible: where each note has a strong reverse envelope. here's a very rough draft just so you see what i mean:

i've just posted up another new version (sorry donovan.) i've added a slight change up in the bassline that comes in after ever few measures of repeats. maybe it will help break up the monotony at least a little bit, without changing the feel. when experimenting i found that adding too much more variation in the notes seemed to make things feel less cohesive. (though that could have also have been due to my note choice.)rachmiel wrote:yes ... but if you vary it just slightly (which you've done already, so slightly that i didn't even hear it!) but audibly it might add a layer of interest to the track that afficionados would appreciate?
additionally i made one of the later drones (a low one) take longer to fade in and i changed its pitch so that it didnt fight the rest of the track quite so much. i shortened the shaker effect at the end too.
i was thinking more along the lines of reverse note order rather than an actual reversed sound. so it comes across as very similar but feels a bit different.i'm hearing your reverse idea, but more audible: where each note has a strong reverse envelope. here's a very rough draft just so you see what i mean:
