VSL Overdrive (horizon series) - any good?

I'm always looking for more realistic electric guitar samples, and I came across this - right within my budget, too. Now, I know that VSL products are generally amazing in sound quality, but I've never heard anything about their guitar libraries. Has anyone ever used this Overdrive library? I can't seem to find any relevant reviews/comments on it..

The sample mp3's at the site sound pretty amazing to me.
Its not too cheap, at about $200, though.

Its a very specialized sound and there are a lot of detailed playing techniques included in the library. A friend of mine has it and he's mostly happy with the library. However, he is very emphatic that it really isn't good for most modern Korn-type music. I wonder how the competition based on that song is going to turn out. I wonder if something like Slayer 2 is more apt to be what you're looking for. If you don't have that already, I'd give it a look. Its a lot cheaper at any rate. There's also some other libraries coming out soon from Bela D Media. So you may wait and see if they're closer to the sound you're looking for.

Luckily, I'm not interested in heavy metal or korn-type stuff. I'm more looking for rhythm guitars, power chord strums, and good leads for songs I write for video games. Currently, I have to use 5-30mb soundfonts, which are absolutely awful. The only thing worse would have to be Slayer 2, which is the worst guitar emulation I've ever seen. I've checked out Hans Zimmer Guitars, too, and I do like the sound; however, it's more expensive than this, smaller, and not as flexible, it seems.
Also, $200 is pretty cheap as far as libraries go. Most good part-specific libraries (ie. choral, woodwinds, strings) start in the $300-$400 range. I'd consider $1000 average, and $2000-$3000 actually expensive when you're talking about high-end libraries.

Well, then you may be satisfied. Just remember, what you hear in those demos is what you get. You could probably mangle it into something else, but its not a 'clean' sound. That's what turned me off about it.
Slayer 2 really that bad? Maybe I need to rethink buying it then. I thought it did pretty good myself.

Check out Monzter Guitars by Precision Sound. Beladmedia will have Lyrical Distortion, which looks interesting. Might want to hold off on buying anything until you find out more about Project6 Lyrical Distortion (Beladmedia).

Does anyone know if Overdrive works with Kompakt? Kompakt can read EXS24, Kontakt, Halion, etc. but the VSL website mentions newer versions in the requirements (e.g. Halion 2, Kontakt 1.5, etc.)
Buy my cd here (Prog rock/synth pop/classical/soundtrack-ish music):

I don't know, but if you are considering Overdrive, you should at least take a look at Prominy's LPC and Bela Media's Lyrical Distortion 1 and 2. I know Lyrical Distortion works in Kompakt and I would think that LPC would, but I don't know (I beleive it works in Kontakt 2).cyanogen wrote:Does anyone know if Overdrive works with Kompakt? By the way, I got pretty nice upgrade price from Kompakt to Kontakt 2 ($180.00, I think). I think it was through Florida Music.

Yeah, I bought LD1 last month and I'm pretty happy with it. I was looking for a different sampleset to complement it. I love how LPC sounds, but I don't want to spend that much money at the moment. I've considered upgrading to Kontakt 2, but I don't think my computer is fast enough. NI recommends a 3.0Ghz P4, and I have a 1.5Ghz Pentium M. Doh. I might just end up getting Tascam's Giga Virtual Instrument in the spring, assuming they have scaled-down versions like with regular Gigastudio.jeffn1 wrote:I don't know, but if you are considering Overdrive, you should at least take a look at Prominy's LPC and Bela Media's Lyrical Distortion 1 and 2.
