Has anyone else noticed that the output of soundsfonts are really low?

You can add as many vol/pan filters as you want and get +6db with each one.

Sure but I was wondering why it it was, with 64 bit internal summing I am not too worried about levels ;-) it's just weird and rather clumsy.

I haven't tried it, but I've noticed that soundfonts in general are very often quiet. Are you entirely positive that it's the player and not the font?

There's no real way to tell is there? I mean when all the fonts are quiet and all the ones I tested are, it still can be the player.

i own sfz+ and it has a nice volume meter :) thats how i compensate, or just crank it with any other plug :)

It's a good point. I was thinking in my head, "Just compare it to the same font, using a different player like sfz" but that still doesn't "prove" anything, it might just show that one player has more 'internal' amplification than the other.

The only way to actually "prove" would be to extract the .wavs from the soundfonts themselves and see how they compare to fullscale. A WAV will still have an internal "volume level".

Get Viena (one n), a free soundfont editor. This way you could:

a) see if the font is to blame - is volume attenuated in the soundfont's settings?
b) could tweak any problematic soundfot and resave it.

Awave and Extreme Sample Converter will do this too, if you own them.

EDIT: I see Viena is offline at the moment. Usually you can get it at http://www.synthfont.com/.

A lot of sf2s have that problem. Ideally, you should maximize the waves within them, as spacefox says above. Failing that, try a good compressor -- a great idea in any case -- and up the final makeup volume.

I find myself putting BuzzRoom's BuzzMaxi (beta 2) on a lot of things. It kinda softens the transients, but I really like the color it adds. I use it all the time on drums to get a softer, Pink Floyd kind of feel.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

I don't use soundfonts anymore but when I has playing with sfz I e-mailed the developer and he sent me instructions on how to boost the volume by changing values in windows registry.
Not fun but possible.

 :tantrum:

Someone here made a small standalone app to tweak several registry parameters of sfz, including volume. I'm sorry, but I can't recall who did it.
But the OP issue was with T's own player, not with sfz.

EDIT: this app is called sfzo and was developed by djipy.

get it here:

And thank you djipy for this useful little tool
