I've heard people freak out about tuned feedback stages in synths, namely the Poly Evolver by Dave Smith. Are there any soft synths with tuned feedback? Maybe teamed with a hefty distortion stage?

i've made stuff with tuned delays (string theory, metallurgy) but nothing that has a feedback path that goes all the way from the end of the chain to back before the filters, like the evolver has. should be doable though. i may have to experiment with it.

off hand, i cant think of any vsts that offer it in the way the evolver does but im probably forgetting some. i'd actally be kind of surprised if someone hasnt done that yet.

Untuned feedback is quite a good effect too. It was one of the secrets of the mini-moog and arp 2600 users: plug the output into the filter. (In SE, can do it through a 1 buffer delay: can be a very nice effect.)

What I'd really like to see is the feedback frequency to be linked to the keyboard. That would be wicked, especially for pads.

theres a feedback oscillator in tera that sounds pretty mad, i guess its the same sorta thing you're talking about.

Here's a softsynth I built a while back. Its basically one giant feedback loop.. 3 oscillators FMing each other, plus LFOs for each. Then they are mixed together, and fed simultaneously into a lowpass and highpass filter, and I think there was a third filter in there somewhere. The two paths get mixed back together and fed all the way back to the beginning of the oscillators again. Or something like that. :lol:

I made this synth the first day I tried Synthedit. It hasn't been updated since, and my label-less GUI is admittedly pretty annoying. I'd do a lot of things differently now, but I've found it pretty useful for industrial-type percussion sounds.

Also keep in mind that Synthedit's feedback loops have a pretty big delay in them. This doesn't really matter for my synth though...

Hi -- I'm trying to understand what 'tuned feedback' means -- does this mean the signal enters a delay line that lasts one cycle of a certain pitch? (So, say, a 50Hz sound is a 20ms delay line.) Does this end up reinforcing that pitch when you hear the sound? (I guess it would reinforce multiples of the pitch too, but less so.)

Chase, how about The Devil Inside by elogoxa? I remember trying it out when I first got into VSTi's, and it sounded pleasantly harsh. I haven't used it for a while, but it's worth a look. I can't tell if it's actually tuned feedback, but at least it's called a "feedback synth."

The tuned feedback in the evolver, while neat and interesting, is not as flexible as you'd expect. It can be rather unpredictable even just from note to note. It also has a limited pitch range and a fairly short decay (no extended sustains). That said, it is nice for making basses a bit weirder and other far-out sounds. I wouldn't want the evolver to be without it.
