I own a bunch of distortion plugs. The ones that I use most for beats tend to the Guitar Amp simulator that comes in Logic 7, Guitar Rig, Amplitube, and I also love the Scream distortion in Reason 2.5/3 for individual hits or for various types of loops. Also, I sometimes boot up Cubase on my PC and process beats with that quadraFuzz that comes in Cubase SX. I tend not to use Izotope Trash as much for beats or drum sounds (sounds a little digital to my ears but what do i know) but more for distorted basses and lead synths and such.

Personally, I like Guitar Rig the best (I find it to be quite versatile) but the Reason scream distortion and the quadrafuzz will always be useful though.

chase gave you an excellent list of freebies, so that is a great starting point. since you asked for the "best" and didnt mention if you wanna pay for it or not, I will throw Izotope trash in to the mix.

sweet thats alot of good distortion plugins....
but what would be prime for Bassdrums.. the type of music im doing, hardstyle, revolves around distorting differnt bass drums to get a ranchy sound. Like how do they make their bass drums sound so rawnchy. Here is an example of what im trying to accomplish: http://www.djhuge.com/distortedkicks.mp3

Depends on what kind of sound and feel you're after.

Simulanalog's JCM900 can do everything from warm, almost clean, to really buzzy. I'd try it first; it may be what you want. The rest of the Guitar Suite also has great models of classic fuzzboxen -- Boss SD-1 and DS-1, and a Tube Screamer.

BTE's Juicy77 is wicked cool, too, and gets really distorted all by itself. Serious gain! The TSS (Tube Screamer) clone is possibly the best such sim, and reall ypushes it further.

Boogex, Saro, Cortex, and XMasTube (the only SynthEdit amp sim I've ever liked) are also great. Cyanide is kinda cool, too.

Check out the "Instruments Effects Hosts etc." link to the upper right to search for more.

Happy fuzzing.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

For Bass Drums (If you like any gabba or hardcore or hhc) Amplitube and Guitar Rig 2 are amazing. Like I said, I like Trash a lot but I don't really find it to be the best for those types of Gabber distorted 909 bass drums.

wish things are as easy as they seem.. but they are not.. i installed Guitar Rig2 to try out H20 style. and now when i load the standalone it says this:

"sorry but your computer does not fulfill the minimum requirements to run Guitar Rig2. you need a CPU that supports SSE or Altivec."

and when i load the VSTi in to soundforge this error happens:

Uh oh, you said the "H" word...

Dude, just search the plug-in database for "distortion" and "free". You can't go wrong, no need for Warez. Guitar Rig is way overkill for making hardcore kicks anyway!

Post

Someone already mentioned it, but guitar suite by Simulanalog is first class. No gui's, but i'm sure the sound is what counts........right?

Post

One more for CamelPhat. Great for kicks and basses.
