I'm temporarily without Philharmonik (long story) and find myself in need of a really stellar solo violin soundfont - cheap or free. The ones I've tried at sf2midi.com and hammersound are too synthy.

Thanks.

try prosamples vol. 41 (solo stings, 49 USD) or http://www.kirkhunterstudios.com/solostrings.html (99 USD).
I don't know of any real good free ones

If you are willing to spend $199, nothing comes even close to Garritan's Stradivari

Check the video:

Try Sonic Reality's "Symphony Strings" (think that's it), not free but not hugely expensive and has a decent solo violin (and viola and cello and various ensemble and...).

Thanks for the replies guys.

All three of these sound exceptional - esp. the Garritan. But, I'm really just biding my time until my desktop comes back from Gateway (mos?), when I'll be able to use Miroslav Philharmonik again (lappy can't take it).

So far the best free thing I've found is the Violin Duet on sf2midi.com. Pretty darn good.
