hi people

I need some 50-60's style guitars (surf, twist, beat, shake ...)

à la Al Caiola, Dick Dale & His DelTones (Pulp Fiction), or Messer Chups ..

please, have you some advices for me?

thanks in advence  cheers!

You need:
1) A Fender Jaguar (that's "Jag-you-are" not "Jagwah") - although i think Dick Dale used a Strat. Heavy strings, Dale apparantly used 18 to 60!!!!!
2) A Fender Reverb amp or emulator with this device - use lots of reverb
3) A nice tremolo stomp box (or one in your software emulator)
4) A heavy pick for fast picking (nothing too flappy or you won't be able to do that fast pick sound)
5) A surfboard

Oh, and play LOUD!

Twang, twang, and more twang.

Mr Ark pretty much hit stuff, but there are a few things I kinda want to throw in the mix.

The "use lots of reverb" suggestion is good, but not just any 'verb will do ya. Trashy sounding SPRING REVERB is one of the keys to that sound. I think Dick Dale used an old Fender box, and basically I think we can all agree that if we sound like Dick Dale, we've hit the nail directly on the head in this one ;) Natural sounding 'verb ain't gonna get ya here.

In the tone I hear in my head, there's tons of trebley twang, and a good amount of pick attack. Single coil pickup, close to the bridge, ought to be what you're looking for. You could probably get a reasonably 'aurf' sound with a humbucker... I really don't know all that much about many of the artists listed, so the tone I'm going for in my head probably isn't the 'only' way to fly.

That tone seems to have more of that metallic-twang too, that only comes from new strings.

Experiment with some slap-back echo/delay too. That's always fun.

To Mr Ark: .18 to .60?? My fingers are crying just imagining it. Did Dick Dale wear gloves when he played or something? Sheesh.

EDIT: After noticing this was in the "samples" section, I'm thinking that we may have missed the boat as far as the advice goes :) I'm good at completely forgetting where I am. Even so, the suggestions are probably useful for getting to the end result he's looking for.

My best friend is an awesome Fender Jaquar player. The first year they ever had the Guitarmageddon contest he was the winner for the South East Division (which includes all of those great TN pickers). His specialy is Surf.

Short Surf Example

Keep in mind this example was done with a $50 drum machine a boss recorder. Don't worry you can still hear his playing rocks.

If you want, I could see if he would be interested in playing on a song or two for you.

Couple of other snippits...

Drifter's Polka

Quitar BQ

Down Yonder

Try Sp3ed's "Ultimate Guitar" or whatever sfz through Simulanalog's Rednef Twin and PSP's SpringVerb (one of the best spring reverb emulators I've ever heard). EQ (pre and post) and compress to taste. Oh, and maybe add an instance of Ruby Tube before the amp sim. It isn't ideal, but it's fast and cheap -- and it sounds really good.

You can also get less authentic but equally excellent results with Simulanalog's JCM900 and its reverb on a clean setting. Voxengo's Boogex and OldSkoolVerb are also excellent. I'm also quite fond of BTE's Juicy77. Even though these amp sims are all geared more to high-gain lead sounds, they have some fantastic clean tones.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

Awesome! The other clips soudn great, too, but the surf one is definitely the best. So much for "...and you'll never hear surf music again."

A Rickenbaker (probably even a 12 string) and a Vox won't harm either. Instant Beatles sound.
Teles were popular as well.
And uhm, if you are into true Rock'n'Roll sounds as well, get some semi-acoustic (a la Gretsch), run it through a cranked Bassman amp.

A modern Rickenbacker won't sound exactly like a 60s one as they now have "Hi-gain" pickups with, I think ceramic magnets, so they are a lot punchier. They're probably more versatile though, but still do great jangle. I own one and I  it.
