I keep reading about how those units have pretty noisy pre-amps. What's been your experience with it?Shane Sanders wrote:Yep. That's what I have. It has a sensitive input, really easy to overdrive, so can take a minute or so to set levels sometimes.
Need help in finding a lossless 'pocket' sampler...

We have their mixers...Mr. Tunes wrote:Rumour has it that someone once dropped a Nagra in the ocean and it still worked fine afterwards.
Here's another high end company but I dont think they have anything pocket sized. http://www.sounddevices.com/
They've had some repairs done after less then a years time . Makes me leary of their long-term operation, but the damage might have caused by the user (possibly), or the location (Antartica) it was damaged at.
The Nagras have survived extreme drenching. In one case, the operator called back and I told him to take out the batterys and rince the insides as best he could with tap water....
After a drying period they were able to continue the shoot

Wow, I guess the 910 came out after I went shopping.Mr. Tunes wrote:No yours is lossy, that's a NetMD model from four years ago. USB qualifies as a digital out I think?Borogove wrote:Lossy compression, though, and on my minidisc recorder (Sony MZ-N707), the drive mechanism is ridiculously loud. In general it's a great platform to get a good recorder for cheap. I think the Hi-MDs are about half the price of a microtrack or the new edirol R-09

Yeah it's quite a model, they also had one alongside it that had a LED extension but that costed a lot more. And then after i bought my model they came out with an even better one that added backlighting and the sony microphone to it(the M series?). Originally there was DRM crap in Sonicstage, it didnt bother me at the time and there was also a hack written. But Sony did the right thing and got rid of it. BTW it had nothing to do with Rootkit, that was the Sony record label, one could easily get the two entities confused.Borogove wrote:Wow, I guess the 910 came out after I went shopping.Mr. Tunes wrote:No yours is lossy, that's a NetMD model from four years ago. Yeah man! But seriously I'll let you in on the thing that pisses me off the most about it. It's this default that sets it to AutoLevel record so if you need to record fast(like 5 seconds fast) you'll have to enter the Recording menu and set it to Manual. And then check the sensitivity. The SP-TFB-2s are a good hoot alongside this MD btw.Borogove wrote:And available on Amazon for US$171. Damn you! At least I can give my 707 to my mother-in-law to justify the upgrade....Mr. Tunes wrote:Yeah it's {MZ-RH910} quite a model
Oh i just checked the price on there the RH-10 aint bad herself, just $25 more!

I haven't used a really good mic with it yet, but my first impression would be to say that it does have a minor tendency toward noise. However, everything that I've recorded with it so far had enough dead space before the sample that I was able to profile it in Adobe Audition and more or less destroy the noise without any problems. I only use the thing to capture stuff that I could never drag home and record in a controlled environment, so it's doing what I need it to do.John Vulich wrote:I keep reading about how those units have pretty noisy pre-amps.
