I have finally got round to ‘starting’ my own artist site where I intend to fill it with nonsense along with a few samples each week, images etc (basically my fun and info site – lots to do but it’s a low priority over my other projects).

You can access it here http://spe3d.com each week I will add one sample that will be free to the point that it will be licensed under the creative commons, they will be in the sample section.

If you want to have creative commons samples – leave feedback as to the type. The plan is all 'future' 'free' samples I do will be at Spe3d.Com - other stuff will be commercial in their appropriate site.

At the moment there is rain and marbles

Edit: feedback indicates creative commons lic is not a good idea - so having a re-think about that

However - Spe3d.Com remains as my fun site and the plan on samples is not quite as it was when I first posted this - the two sample packs there will remain cc lic'ed though.

I thought it was pretty cool JerGoertz - it was a grilla post here that brought my attention to the simplicty of implemeting it, and a tee boy request, due to the fact I don't allow 'any' of my past 'free' samples to be altered or distributed – however some are royalty free – but I cannot please everyone.

The Commons license says this in short

You are free:

* to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work
* to make derivative works

Under the following conditions:


Attribution. ---- You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor.

Noncommercial. --- You may not use this work for commercial purposes.

Share Alike. --- If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under a license identical to this one.

It also says

* For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work.

However this bit applies to the commons licensed samples.

• Any of these conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.

So if you have a really cool commercial project that could use one or more of these samples – contact me about it and I will consider if a cost would be involved or if it would be free.

Seems fair to me. its a share alike license, why is that a Bummer? what would be a better option - I sample stuff, record, edit and host them, give it to you all for free, you then make money with the samples? - would that not be a Bummer for me?!!

I'd just like to add:
with Creative Commons, you get to pick from a whole range of licences, including licenses that do allow commercial use.
And, like SampleStream said, commercial use is always OK if you get the copyright holder's permission, regardless of any CC license.

Think of the CC license as a way to tell the public: go ahead and do this and that with my music, and contact me if you want more - whereas default copyright obliges people to ask permission for whatever it is they want to do with the material.

it means both of those things, but as spe3d says above,you can ask the rightsholder for permission to use for commercial purposes and then come to some arrangement as to the terms of your agreement.

I reckon lots of guys n girls will find a use for samples like this for adding alternative textures to music – I would think 98% of the music is going to be free and not commercial so I don’t see this being an issue – however if the 2% wrote and said hey this music track I done is going to be commercial, is this ok – I would almost certainly say yes, go ahead.

If however someone was to start making sample disks, or presets on a commercial scale, and I was asked, then it would almost certainly involve a fee of some kind depending on what it was. – I assume though that 98% of guys n girls would be more interested in making new sounds and distributing them for free, and also involving them in their music – which is what this little collection of sounds is going to be about – as some guys n girls really do want to do that – the 2% who want to make money directly out of the samples can contact me about it.

I think also there will be some who won’t care about what the license is, and do whatever anyway. But I have to put some kind of license on these. And the creative commons share alike – non commercial license is what I have chosen – I think its fair and should in theory be of interest to the largest group of sample users – who just like to manipulate and use samples – if they get lucky with their music, great – if they just want to make money directly with the samples, then this is cool too, they would just need to contact me about it so something can be arranged.

The best way to do this IMHO!

If Im ever lucky enough to do something commercial and use these, its really not difficult to drop you a mail and chat to you about it!
