Yep! there are elemets of the R-4 that are not good, but there are things that can be done to change that - the FR-2 however, is pretty much ok to go, right out of the box :D

careful with the FR-2... great recorder all around but some units get plagued with various battery issues :(

On top of this my friend recently was recording car sounds for an upcoming film and he was finding the thing shut off in high-vibration settings(like a race car). The fix was to use a flash card instead of the internal hardrive.

The FR-2 does not come with an internal hard disk – other than the option to put either ibm micro drives or cf2 microdrives into one of two slots on the side – the microdrives rotate, and indeed high vibrations will cause issues for sure – that’s when the beauty of solid state comes into play with the option to use standard CF cards instead, with no moving parts.

I would not be surprised if using some microdrives that the power will deplete faster than normal – there was a bug in some microdrive units that stopped certain manufactures products from cutting power to them (one of my cameras is like that, with some cards)

Phantom power, headphone pre-amp (this can be tuned off entirely to help save power) and lcd backlight can also all influence the power consumption. If possible its best to use mics with their own power.

However the battery life could be improved and feedback given to the manufacture by lots of owners has pushed them to make plans for the FR-2 to take an optional clip on high capacity battery, I am not sure if this is available yet, I think it will be a welcome addition instead of the having to change 8 rechargeable batteries every few hours (depending if or not phantom power is used or if microdrives are in play)

It’s a cracking product though for sure :)

Anything that has a low self noise (very important) and has the good noise to signal ratios plus has the frequency range and spl range you wish to record in.

Good and not too expensive are mics by Rode – a good general all round starting mic is the Rode NT-3 – if you feel ambitious and don’t mind using stands then even the NT-1a or NT-1000 are a good choice – but if you are recording in flight paths or have a lot of ambient sounds you don’t want to capture, its also worth having a shotgun mic of somekind.

I had an M-Audio product once (not a microtrack) – it fell to bits in the first week (support was crap – I am in the UK) I will never use an M-Audio product again as a result – so I personally have not used it or know anything about it.

Most stuff is - bit of a shock at first, and its only till you start using the more exspensive stuff you realise why.

There has been some info that the microtrack has some problems with noise. Manytone here has one and was pleased with it. So I suggest if that is what you can afford, try it.

SampleStream gave a good discussion of mic choice. If you are on tight budget and don't need super fidelity MXL condensors are the way to go. You can get two for eighty bucks.
