I have Cubase SX2.2. And so far i have not seen Steinberg making any attempt to allow midi recording channels to auto select program changes for VSTi's or Midi instruments.
It would be so simple.

Let me expain what i am talking about...

Would it not be so simple to allow multiple Cubase recording channels to drive the same VSTi/MIDI instrument. The channels each would have a different program selected. When the song runs any channel that has active data would have a midi program change inserted at the beginning of the data. So automating midi program changes. Making it simple to have the same VSTi/MIDI instrument being used many times over during a song with different programs.

What do you think?

As far as i know no Cubase version does this yet.

The problem with doing that is glitches when you switch patches. You normally get notes cut off or clicks etc. I just have multiple instance of the vsti with different patches.

If I understand you correctly what you want has always been available in Cubase - just send program changes via CC from within the part. But, as UltraJv pointed out, you might get glitches - to circumvent this in most makes it suffices to make sure there is a bit of time before and after each program change where the instrument is not playing.

Also, all MIDI tracks have sends that allow you to control more than one MIDI track from a single channel/track. You can further refine that control using either the MIDI transformer from the track or the plugin version.

As Josmoker said, the ability to do what you are saying has been there for years and years, back to the Atari days.

Agreed, the feature of doing program changes has been around for years. What i am saying that. It would be a good feature that Cubase automates it for you. So if you select the VSTi for another channel then as you change the cahnnel's program then this automatically changes the first Program Name CC or even adds a new one in at the first segment seen.
It is true that there are glitches with Program Change with VSTi in having sound crackles, pops and silences. The automated Prog Change CC could be inserted at a point well before the sound arrives for the VSTi of course. Cubase could take care of that too.

Hm, not sure what exactly you want there. I must admit I did have a bit of trouble getting the right program to play on the right MIDI channel with multitimbral instruments like Ninja - the implementation was a bit dodgy with that one as well, though. I imagine a feature like that creating more problems than solving them, though - anytime you'd change a program on the synth and you're on the wrong midi track, point in the song or change to the wrong program, you'd have an unwanted program change written in the track you need to remove. Friggin nightmare...

just my 2 shiny coins, though
