true for lots of my music too. but experiment in the best sense (i hope!): an attempt at something i've never done before and never heard anyone else do either. it's my favorite kind of music, because it always surprises.

hi,

Imo experimental music is great for making. It takes a lot of time, is rewarding when you finally got the result.
But... when I listen to experimental music (as e.g. squarepusher just to name sth) i can't bring myself to enjoy it (as ingenious it is made)
I can enjoy the work that is put in , but that's it.

h: i think your experience with experimental music is a common one, to appreciate its skill, but not really LIKE it. for me, it works almost opposite: i can appreciate the expertise that goes into making a commercial/genre track, but what really excites me is the experimental stuff. ;-)

I can't answer that completely becuase my role at the Auditorium is limited to moderating the Deadly/Evil section, but for what it's worth 98%(or close) of all accounts I have seen in my area have accounts here, so there is serious overlap.

The proposed notion in your quote is confornted with/complicated by the following:

A - As an older site, there's far more members here than at the Auditorium, and

B - Likely a result of A, I recieve _much_ more generally wide-spread attention/comments/listens to material I share here.

The Auditorium is still in it's infancy I feel. People there(again, at least in my section) are less inclined to lounge and make multiple posts through the day; it's more of just-the-facts kind of place relating to the tracks.

I talk most of my shit here; over there I don't say much at all.

I let my material do my talking as much as possible at the Auditorium.

edit: rachMiel, how is it you can make these wonderfully elaborate Reaktor ensembles and can't manage to ever hit the 'quote' button when you post here?

sickle: i just listened to five pieces in the experimental section of the auditorium and liked ALL of them. this is pretty much unprecedented for me. ;-) who knew? i'll be spending more time there.

Yes. Because "every piece of music which is not a result of playing an instrument or imitating the playing of an instrument, but is the abstraction of one of these techniques" is in my opinion experimental music (whitout worrying about history:) . I think that squarepusher has that label.

Anyway, that was not the question. If you'd ask me if there should be a subdivision for experimental music, I'd say "yes". But why not a subforum for every style?

Though it would be difficult to moderate, "what really qualifies as experimental" = subjective as all hell.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I do write popular music, but writing minimalist experimental stuff is so much more rewarding for me. I'm not sure what it is about repeating the same god damned phrase and melodies for two and a half minutes that's so attractive, but I love doing it.

Seems like a pretty fair assesment to me.

The fact that the auditorium offers personalised sub-forums is a feature that has been under utilised.
It could be a good base for an experimental collaborative group.
The forum could be public/private/read only/by invitation only or some combination of these.

I have an interest in some kind of random/generative experimental collaboration..

im all for it, but as its an expermental wing can we also have perhaps discussions on experimental ideas.
i imagine this would mean a seperate forum altogether tho

either way ill be honest, it does get on my tits sometimes when people get all "thats not even music..." it would be nice to have a place where i feel comfortable posting my stuff without worrying about that kinda shit. no im not saying i just want praise, but a little understanding that not everything is verse chorus 3 chords and a solo

is that too harsh?

Yes, I would like this "wing", and think also The Auditorium is not as used as it could be. It's a very nice place!
