but experimenting can just be finding new ways of exploiting tried and tested methods.
its doesnt have to be about discovering the latest new fangled thing, its about personal experimentation too.
a million people before me have probably done most of the things i do, but i approach hings from the point of view that I havent done them before

. i'm tired of doing shit and not getting anywhere different than anybody else can. this calls for a kickass group of people, be it here or elsewhere, who are willing to get somewhere different, home...

again, individually or as a group, and upon being listened to, we should be identified as "oh yeah this is the kvr experimental freaks", or "this is the dude who used to change his name a lot" :p...

more of a support/help group who are truthful, determined and have a strong sense of direction. (last two traits i don't have) ... lost souls united.

This is true to an extent Vurt. But I prefer to call that 'reinterpretation' .. for instance, you and I.. we both dabble with the same sort of music. We both like our long drawn out drones and we both like our blippy bloopy clicky goodness...

But our stuff sounds markedly different. Perhaps this difference is down to our own interpretations of what a long and drawn out drone should sound like, and what a blippy bloopy clicky sound is.

If this is true, its not really an experiment. We already have pre-concieved notions of these sounds and what they should sound like.

This is an interesting topic though. What counts as experimentalism - we need to nail that one before we build any homes for it

I think the thing I'm most tired of is thinking the way I do about my music. I seem to have this subconcious stigma, where I consistently compare my music to everyone elses, and if their music makes me feel something more strongly than my own, I convince myself that my music is worse. :S

Sounds like a plan! I also think that maybe to experiment as well as you can, you perhaps shouldn't have a direction??

in this case, the direction is perhaps to touch sound in ways that nobody ever has before. pretty general and wide direction, almost no direction, but i think it has a name... new sound.

The way I tend to try to experiment is in the form of processes. Like, I'll think "I wonder what you get when you cross this with this" type of thinking.

How do you go about approaching the decision to find a new sound?

I guess you can have an experiment in aimlessness. To me the word experiment suggests a method or a means to an (unknown?)end.
Inertia needs to be overcome, some kind of force/direction needs to be applied...

I'd go with that, yes. As an interested (or not so) thing, there was a guy recently on ResonanceFM. What he did was linked a brick, that was hanging above his head, to his telephone. So if anyone called, the brick would drop down and crush his skull.

No one phoned, but what an experiment!!
