I was wondering if anyone out here was playing around with their IRs. Aside from pitching (an idea from another post), what else are you free to do to them without screwing the up? Is there any catch to messing with them a little in the first place? Is there any convention on the matter at all?

just make sure you keep the original, other than that feel free to try anything, remember to report back with any successes or failures :)

You can always try stacking a few different ones together…

Aside from pitch effects, i tried a prepared sample of white noise during 3 seconds ( white noise + stereo spread + fade out ),

the result as IR gave me a quite decent reverb and i expect at the present time to experiment automated filter effects ( lo-hi-band pass, stereo phasers...,and maybe more complex automated equalisation, automated DFX monomaker to simulate a progressive stereo spreading, etc... ) and see what will result

Because i created a personnal set of sampler's patch based on all kind of extracted tuned hits ( many commercial song's end among others ) i tried late yesterday to see how they worked ar IR, but unless a few exceptions, the result was quite similar and a bit boring and dissapointing

Oh yes, i forgot :

You can try to make transposed copies of an IR especially if it "room size" feeling is determinant

if not obvious :

TRANSPOSE UP for smaller size
TRANSPOSE DOWN for bigger size (...but expect a loss of brightness after important down transposition)

This is a identical experience you may have with a sampler...
