Anybody can give me some advice about Amplitude & GuitarRig Vs. Vamp2 & Pod2 ??? I just want to record my guitar in studio .
So should I select buying a software like GuitarRig 2 Apmlitude2 or a hardware like Vamp2 and Pod2??? How about their performance???

Thank you very much !!!

You are going to get all kind of answers here.
The softwares you can download demos and test for yourself.

As for me:
GuitarRig - I don't get it, it sounds very bad to my ears.
Amplitube - I love it
Vamp2 - I own it but I never use it, hate the background noise
POD2 - I tested it several times, it's OK but not great.

By the way there are many others like GTR2 and SanAmp.

I can't stand the sound of amplitube, totaly unmusical in my books.

Here are my favorite distros

Valvetone ->
Sonic Foundry Distro
or Izotope Trash or Gsuite or Guitar Rig (slightly overrated)-> Hydratone (stack 3 or 4 of these, eq a sh*load with the blast turned out, sounds freaking almost like real air)
add another valve tone...
I find that using good distortion in the digital world requires mulpitle versions of it to have real musical results.

Though, nothing sounds as good as a good amp and air molecules.
Its all about musical results at the end of the day. Hope that helps.

what kind of music do you play?
what kind of tones are you looking for?

never tried guitar rig, but Amplitube was always way too thin/noisy/artificial-sounding for my tastes. owned a PodXT, fit my needs nicely... the free firmware upgrade from line6 is an essential download though, from what i remember it completely changes the tonal characteristics of many of the amp sims.

Vs. Godzilla? ;)

The biggest advantage of the hardware is being able to take it around with you and live. The biggest advantage of the software plug-ins is that you can integrate it within your recordings and change the guitar amp/effects in your tunes at any point from tracking to mixing (and remixing a year later with a different amp setting). Total recall.

Some people have both hardware and software for the best of both worlds. If you had to choose because of budget then I'd go by whether you play out live more or record in the studio more. Good luck.

I'm personally a big fan of the Line6 stuff. I also like lots of the tones from Guitar Rig and Amplitube, but I just recently got rid of my Behringer V-Amp Pro because it seemed noisey and not as multi-dimensional as the others. I also own a Vetta 2 HD as well as the Guitar Port and one of my best friends owns the XT Live. I also used to own the 1st generation Bass POD as well as a Flextone 2 XL 2x12 (basically a Guitar POD 2.0 with speakers) and liked it for a lot of stuff. From a guitar player's perspective I seem to enjoy the Line6 stuff the most but I have been tinkering with the Guitar Rig lately and hear lots of similarities especially where the virtual mics are concerned. To be honest, any of those options are potential winners in the right hands. It's a good day to be a guitarist. Lots of superb possibilities equipment-wise. Amp modeling is really taking some huge strides forward these days, enough for me to sell off three Mesa amps (Recto head, Maverick 2x12, and a Nomad 4x10) and a Marshall 1/2 stack (TSL 100 with a V30 loaded 4x12 cab). Like Squids mentioned, VST's are so convenient since you can literally "re-amp" your tones after the fact. But those VST's can eat a lot of CPU at times. If you intend to do a lot of guitar layering, that may become an issue unless you track freeze as you go. I'm also hoping to buy the Line6 UX2 soon and start loading it up with model packs. That way I can just use the Vetta for live playing and use the UX2 for laptop recording. When I go into Guitar Rig or the Amplitube stuff I use my Presonus Firepod's instrument input. Lots of scenarios but it's all good in the end. Best of luck!

If you 'only' want to record guitar, I'd take a serious look at the Line6 Toneport (UX2). I haven't tried it yet, but it's getting great reviews, it looks pretty, and AFAIK shares the POD's specs.

Hi,Mauvehead, and all of my friend, thanks for your respondence. I just do my guitar work in my studio. May be I should choose Guitar Rig 2 or Ampllitude. But how about the dynamic respondence when using software instead of hardware?? I often heard people say the dynamic respondence of software is not so good as hardware. What do you think about it ? Thank yo all the way...

.. i have Guitar Rig Rig 2 and Amplitube 1. (and prefer AT1 over GR2).
But if you´re not in a hurry you could still wait for Amplitube 2, which should be out by the end of the year/early next year .. :)

I've got a Vetta II Combo Hardware and Amplitube I on the Computer. On recordings I always use Amplitube. To me it sounds great and gives the flexibility to change every setting during the mix, so it will always fit perfect. You can never record easier than just plug in your guitar to your soundcard. I would deny the statement, that it sounds thin. Of course it depends on the presets/settings you're using...

If you're going to studio it might be a good choice to use line6's ampfarm (if the studio is running pro tools). But this is another price range though.

What might also be interesting is Waves GTR. I don't use it, but I've heard songs made with it. Check it out at http://www.waves.com/content.asp?id=1684

Of course simulanalog guitar suite sounds good, but it provides a little less possibilities.

I read your dynamic question to late, so here you got my second post (Sorry). Well it is true, that the dynamic within the software is less than with an amp. To me, nothing beats a fender strat on a fender combo... You can't reach this with any digital stuff, also not with Vetta or POD etc. Referring to recordings, won't you compress it anyways?

Thanks Waynemendozz again. But what do you think the dynamic difference between pod2 xt and At1 & Gt rig2 ? Is it just not so obvious or it is very apparent??? I hardly buy a guitar combo and pick up the sound using microphone ,that's too difficult and not so easy .

For the money, I can't imagine any way to beat TonePort UX2. (well, the UX1 has the same guitar sounds, etc., but the UX2 brings so much more to the equation that I feel it's worth the extra).
