you could always just use samples of 'real' instruments...
overthrow KRAPITALISM ! you have nothing to lose but your claims.

re: reverse engineer & dr. orange

sorry i'm late to this thread and can't be arsed quoting everybody...

but the scottish engineer is correct... it's bloody dirt cheap to build this stuff, and duh, you build it out of electronic components.

quote: "do you know how much it costs to build a filter?"

ahh.. yes, i know EXACTLY how much. Look HERE (click please) for an absolutely wonderful filter you can build. The PCB is $12 from that page. The components that you solder to it can be had for about $20-30 from Mouser or DigiKey etc etc.

so yeah, f**k man, build a monster one bit at a time, it's as cheap as you want it to be...

pics have been sitting in my cam for a couple days, i just gotta get off my ass to make audio samples, but check the mod. systhesis forum in the next day or two for my mini-adventure building the Psycho LFO. this thing ROCKS, and the PCB was $5 from CGS and the components came to $21 total. insane.

the ONLY way to get that real analog synth sound is with a real analog synth ... then of course you get into "why won't my analog synth stay in tune?", and "why doesn't it sound the same as it did last week?" .... "why can't i get any sound out of this f****r" and of course "where has all my money gone?"

this is my baby  got it for £50 :P happy days

Baniev,

Look..I totaly disagree with many issues you claim. I can give you a list of musicians who use 99% softsynths and you wont even notice that.
Now..some synths wont sound like real ones, and thats obvious. But there are some synth emulations which are amazingly well made.. Such as like Imposcar, Minimonsta, Korg Polysix, even Steinberg's good old Model-E is awesome :) If you want warmness, apply nice swirl chorus effect, make pitch - fine-tuning modulation via lfo in a small amount...about the HIs, If you seem to have problems with high freqz (well lack of highs), well i have a solution for that too - add harmonics to te high frequency band. There's a brilliant and very simple to use plugin by 4Front called "Auxiter" and it costs only 35$
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/941.html
You should check it out !

If you can spend some more cash there's the PSPaudioware's MixTreble
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/510.html
It is more exensive ~150$ but can offer much more flexebiliy.

If you want "full" sounds, you can add or modify harmonics to the mid-low/low freq range. Again, There are some good plugins for that.
And about filtering, every plugin use different filtering algorithms. There are softsynths that have incredibly shitty filtering capabilities and there are softsynths that have amazing filtering capabilities...
BTW have you heard URS EQs? they are awesome.

Its all a matter of how you'r gonna use it all.

They say, a bad dancer blames the floor for being curved... eh

Not hard feeling man :) But keep working on it.

Baniev,
Why are you limiting yourself to a certain genre? The advantage of digital vs. analog is how little fuss it takes to do anything. I am strictly an amateur at music (still sophomore in high school) but I've had lots of fun making short little ditties that have no attempted genres. One of the greateset things about KvR is how much diversity there is with all of the music. Use digital to explore new boundaries, not redefine old ones (although the old ones are still a lot of fun).

Hopefully someone else can figure out what I was going for in this post.

That's one of Ken's. The PCBoard is $15 bucks. Looks like there might be $100 bucks worth of parts + Panel + Knobs + Power Supply. He used the LM394 super pair. If you can find one it's $20 by itself. Maybe $180 w/power supply.

Post

hmm, you'd probably just make a connector to your existing power supply (i would), and it looks to me more like $30-40 worth of parts, not nearly $100, i'm sure.

i've built a couple of Ken's projects myself.... this one isn't that big at all. check mouser or digikey for good prices on parts

panels are another story - you can spend $100+ on a panel alone if you go to Front Panel Express or something. or you can also easily fashion one yourself for under a dollar. i go the medium route and buy blank panels from PAiA for $3 to $5 a panel, and drill them myself. So cost for that is under $5 anyway.

it's like anything - look at pens for example. i can get a package of Bic disposable pens for 50 cents. but i can also buy a single Mont Blanc pen for over $6000. you know.

I didn't think I could be that far off so I got out the calculator and used cheap parts (1/8th jacks and open back pots). I did a little rounding. +/- $10

board $15.00
parts $61.00 w/lm394 & pots
panel $5.00 Paia
knobs $6.00
jacks $5.00
= $92 wo/power supply

A power-one (+/- 15V @ 2A) supply is about $70
= $162.00

Add another $20 for better jacks & pots. = $182.00

I was a little off with my guess but not much, even using a blank panel. It would only be $40 in parts without the lm394 so you could save another $18 if you used a lm3046. = $144.00.

You can use your own power supply if you have one. If you wanted to build one on your own you could save another $40 but it wouldn't be a power-one class supply.

thanks for your helpfullness guys. But what i´am still wondering is whether it is a synth out that sounds exactly like the hardware version of the synth, just like it is the case with ABL and phoscyon?

What do you mean by "exactly"? I can play the same note on three guitars all made of wood, all with the same model strings and pickups. They all sound like guitars. I can even play them the same way and adjust their sound so that each is very close to the others in tone but do they sound "exactly" like each other? No. Not even 3 strats sound "exactly" the same. Moogs, Arps and TBs of the same type and production run sound different. Which one did they get "exactly" right?

How in the name of all things logical can anyone think a pile of C++ and digital siginal processing sounds "exactly" the same as infinate sample rate (that means real time, all of the time)analog electronics, is beyond me? Does it mean so much to some, that they can clam a $60 software program is equal to a $600 synthesizer and believe it? Unreal!

Sample rate by definition means that it's on part of the time and off part of the time.. That means there are holes in the signal. Digital siginal processing also adds aliasing to the original signal. It adds stuff that isn't there and leaves out stuff that is. Can not, no way, not even... be "exactly" the same. The good thing is that it cost $60 bucks, it won't break down and it's close enough for a mixed mp3. You got what you paid for so be happy. :)
