Why do realtime midi arps never get it quite right?

I've been trying lots of different arpeggiators to do manual chord-based arpeggiations. (e.g., hold down 3 notes and it arpeggiates through them.

Problem is with the "Up Up", "Down Down" style arpeggiations.

None of them start on the highest note and arpeggiate down. It's always slightly out of sequence.

I know these things are quite hard to program, but if 3 notes start at the same tick point in the timeline, why can't the arpeggiator work out which of the notes to start from depending on the method it's using?

So far I've tried ERA2, eXT, TobyBear Arpimedes and nf_Arp2 (based on ChrisK's module).

All of these are great arps, but the sequence never seems to be quite right and changes depending on which notes you draw first?

Good question. I've now given up on them and gone back to doing it the old fashioned way.

The best arp I've seen so far is in Z3ta+. The arp + trancegate in Vanguard is pretty good too. I've never seen anything standalone or in any host that5 impresses me. The arps in Orion, FL and Sonar (three hosts I use) are all awful imho.

oh c'mon....get eXT and you'll never use another arp again...:)

So what's a good one worth?

It's certainly a strange one.

The internal arps of Slayer II (Cabinfever: probably same arp module as Vanguard) and Synth 1 get it perfectly right, even when the notes are a couple of ticks out or when live playing.

sonarman: Likewise, I've given up of them. I use them as a guide and then manually add them as note data.

Is there a CAL script available that will take a chord in the piano roll and destructively arpeggiate them?

It's possible to do this in FLStudio via the Tools->Arpeggiate option and works great as a quick work-a-round. There must be CAL script somewhere, but my searches haven't been very productive. :(

[edit - Hink: I use energyXT and have used it fanatically for years. ;) However, the same problems occur with the chords arpeggiator, plus it doesn't do triplet time either. ]

Look at Maxx Claster & Octopus arps.

They've solved the problem of harmonising major and minor chords

What's wrong with the arp in Orion? It's very flexible IMHO. Especially since you can define your own arp sequences using a text editor.

if you can find a copy of techno toys arpx8... thats the dope shit.

Since someone mentions XT, is it possible in eXT to just get it to arpeggiate notes you hold down, or is it always a pre-programmed pattern?

I don't use arpeggiation much, but I couldn't find this standard behaviour in XT before.

Heya. You can use the "Chords" module instead of the "Arpeggiator".

Click on the "1" button and clear the notes. (or do it manually)
Click on the "1" button and add a Sequencer
Add a note at "Root"
Select an Up, Down or UpDown arpeggiation.
Hold down the chord and it should arpeggiate through them. You can stick the chords module into eXT either in the main area, or in a Sequencer MIDI track mixer (F9) in the "Groove-MIDI FX" area. This is where you can stick 3rd party arpeggiators too.
