When I plug in a mic into my us-122 interface and record in cubase, the volume is really low even with the monitoring knobs turned all the way up. Do I configure something in Cubase or my interface?

Thanks,
Mike

Does your mic need phantom power???
You have to enable it if so.
The Tascam control panel has its own VU, why not using it to get to the optimal I\0 values
before monitor thru SX.

us-122 is not very good . it is usb and it has a weak pre-amp.I tried it and settled on a firewire interface.

Anyway it is not cubase issue at all. it is your interface which is the culprit.

in case you are using dynamic mic you dont need phantom power. if your mic is a condensor one then you can try phantom power to improve the situation

I used a couple of different basic stereo microphones by inserting them in the guitar line in input. The last one I tried is a stereo clip on mic from radio shack (with surprising good quality) that I bought for my minidisc recording sessions. I haven't tried a condensor mic yet. What good quality firewire interface and mic do you recommend for the mobile musician?

I have an US-122, Edirol PCR a 30, a Fireface800, a Behringer BCA2000 and a DSPF.
the cards i enjoy the most is the US 122, bus powered, great sound, no frigging mixers, i like a lot it's I/0... wait a little bit more that's my advise, nevertheless i'm very tempeted to at least try the M-AUDIO Solo and Line6 newest.

As stag says, you should give more time to this card and it may work for you as it did for him.

secondly, the mic you are mentioning may not give very good results as they are not meant for these kind of work. atleast buy a Shure SM57($89) or similar low-budget mic.

For firewire interface M-Audio Firewire 410 and ESI quatafire 610(i use it) are nice one. There are many ofcourse to list.
