I have a full copy of Live 5 and Cubase SX3. Lately I've been starting all my new projects in Live 5 because it seems easier to get things going from a writing perspective. Cubase, with all the features it has, still has a horribly clunky and f@#ed up generic remote midi issue that Steinberg seems to "just not give a shit about". If you read the forums, you'll see. Setting up remote control of midi parameters is ridiculously easy in Live- as it should be- so I can get on with my writing. Anyway, the Abletons seem to "get it" when it comes to customer service and ease of use. I think they are the future of DAW- even though there is a "leave it as a live tool" camp midset out there among some DJs. What do ya'll think?

I think it's a very nicely designed and engineered application, from people who have looked at the whole sequencer 'genre' from a different angle.

It doesn't replace Logic for me, but it's certainly a useful alternative for its own strengths.

Future of DAW's? Well, not everyone does music that fits neatly into the dance/loop genre - not that Live is restricted to that, but it's not nearly as full featured an application for traditional recording as AlsiLogbaseformer.

It certainly has a bright future ahead though, I'm sure...

Live needs work in the layout department. Modular hosts IMO have the right idea as far as layout is concerned.
I have Live as my main DAW but that may change if EnergyXT version2 is a suitable replacement. We shall see in the near future.

I do have to agree that Ableton is in the right direction as far as ease of use and immediate realtime song manipulation/structuring.

Lots of talk about EnergyXT on this forum. Seems to be VERY popular. Why so? I guess I could take the time to mess around with a demo. Still, I'd value anyone's input on EnergyXT.

First off, it is very inexpensive for what it does. And what it does is pretty much what other $500-$800 DAWs do.
Secondly, the support from Ext's developer, Jorgen, is fantastic.
Feature suggestions and bug reports are handled fairly quickly (obviously depending on the circumstance).

Lastly, regardless of the main host you utilize, Ext can always be a great addenda being that it can be used as a VST instrument/effect. It's modular environment is great for complex setups that would otherwise be hard or impossible with hosts like Live.

As you say, go try the demo. If you write material within the demo, you can save it. The only limitation for the demo version is you are unable to load saved files.

I like Live and I now use it as my main host.

Pros:

1. Easy to use. Drag and drop very similar to Tracktion.

2. Good selection of bundled plugs. Phaser isn't particularly nice though.

3. Automation is simple and easy to edit. Yet, powerful enough to do what I need. No bezier curves though.

4. Appears to work with all the VSTi I use with no problem.

5. Freeze function is quick and stable. It also allows you to control the mix and send levels after the freeze has been done.

6. Good routing of midi and audio on each channel strip.

7. Very good real time warping feature.

Cons:

1. Doesn't seem to support most VST midi plugs.

2. High CPU usage, and maybe some issues with maximum audio track count on my machine.

3. Rewire and PDC is not working correctly. There is no way one can adjust for the inherent lead in what Live is natively putting out and any lagging rewired inputs.
