Drum Replacer - does this exist?

Not sure if this is an effect or an instrument. I know about Drumagog and SoundReplacer. Is there any freebie or cheaper drum replacer plugin?
I have an idea that I think would make an amazing plugin. Maybe it already exists, but I don't think so. (I don't have drumagog, so maybe it can do this, but I can't tell).
Imagine you could record a drumkit with just a single crappy mic. or maybe two. Imagine you could apply a plugin that could extract out every hit, work out which drum or cymbal you hit, and trigger the appropriate sample - through individual audio channels. I think this would be fantastic.
All you would need to do is identify the spectral curve for each individual instrument. Each one has it's own resonant frequency, or defining frequency. For example, you could use Voxengo Span or something to look at a sample of each drum to see what frequency peaks the highest.
The plugin I imagine would have a Detect mode where it analyses the recorded audio and works out how many different instruments there appear to be (based on average peak frequencies). Maybe with a user defined limit.
The user would then be offered a list of samples - you could hear the sample chunk of audio and assign it a name, and then assign your choice of replacement sample.
This supposes that no two instruments are hit at the same time - although if you did, you could always just assign it a name like "kick/crash" and make a sample that was a mix of both. The software could give you a choice as to whether the sample plays in full, or is cut off by the next hit.
I think this would be very powerful, especially for people trying to record a naff acoustic kit with cheap gear.
If it could spit out midi notes, that would be even better. In fact, I would be happy with something that only converted hits to midi notes, based on spectral peaks.
Anything out there already?
Or just a simple hit to midi plugin that I could use with a parametric eq to select specific instruments?

Not specifically what you describe, but you may be interested in either KTDrumtrigger or Billaboop.

Thanks for these suggestions. Bearing in my mind, a typical soundreplacer isn't what I have in mind. I'm working on the principle that nothing of the original track should leak through - just silence until the right sample is triggered.
Some of these look very close to what I would like.

mda beatbox won't exactly do this, but the vein of the idea is similiar, replace drum samples with (in its case) old school drums via pitch detection. Not what you are asking for but fun to play with nonetheless.
my sig will go here

I get great results using Peakfreak from Tobybear.
It's part of his Midibag bundle http://www.tobybear.de/p_midibag.html
You can set low and high amplitude levels and narrow or widen the frequency detection of signals.
It outputs a midi note which you can use to drive, in my case, Battery.
e.g. (SX) insert it on the kick drum channel and set up your detection parameters, create a midi channel and set the input to receive Peakfreak and the output to play your favourite drum sample player.
