Hey peeps,
I was just wondering if anybody could please help me figure out where the breakbeat in this song came from? I've heard it in a couple of songs and I've thought of possibly sampling it myself.
Thanks,
Marc

... I remember someone saying that it was sampled from Mantronix's "King Of The Beats". If you'd like such drumsounds, I'd recommend E-Lab Xstatic Goldmine Vol. II - discontinued, though, but perhaps you can find it for cheap on Ebay...

According to www.the-breaks.com it was sampled from Jocelyn Brown's "Love's Gonna Get You Baby". Mantronix's "King Of The Beats" uses the Amen break. It was one of the first to do so.

I don't know - this is the net after all - but it has been around for few years now. There are other sites like this one but I haven't bookmarked them, I tried googling to confirm and I got a french site here.
I've tried DOA but so far I got was that the rides are from NWA's "Express Yourself".

Snap! sampled "Love is Gonna Get You Baby," but I think that was only for Jocelyn Brown's vocal, "I Got The Power!"Barbed Wire Kiss wrote:According to www.the-breaks.com it was sampled from Jocelyn Brown's "Love's Gonna Get You Baby". I don't think the break is included. They only sampled the acapella version.

I know that I've also heard this break on "Let it roll," by Doug Lazy.

LOL....which is just a loop from "Express Yourself" by Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band.Barbed Wire Kiss wrote: I've tried DOA but so far I got was that the rides are from NWA's "Express Yourself".
also, if any of you folks have ever actually heard king of beats then you'd know that it does in fact use the amen break at the beginning but then goes into a completely new break in the middle. I dont know what that break is though.

The start is Amen but the break you mean is definately just the very first part of take me to the mardi gras re-triggered at every kick/snare hit (with some additional production).

If everyone uses an Amen break - Does this mean they all sound the same?
Or is an Amen Break a general term for a Break?

As some people here said, its truly from Mantronix "King of the Beats". This track includes also the "Amen Break" (mostly known from NWA's "Straight outta Compton") but Bob James "Mardi gras" is the base for the beat what Snap took (it comes later at the track). Mantronik told in an interview about this, that he sampled only the second bell-sound from "Mardi gras" for this break. The complete "Mardi Gras"-break follows in "King of the Beats".MarcDaShark wrote:I was just wondering if anybody could please help me figure out where the breakbeat in this song came from? btw. the Sax at the Snap-track is from Maceo Parker, some vocal parts came from Chill Rob G, later was this new recorded with the voice of Turbo B.

Here's a very nice video artwork about the Amen break by Nate Harrison. He has also done a video essay about the TB-303, you can find it here.
Sorry if this is off topic but nevertheless worthwile to watch.
