I didn't say it was!guitarzan wrote:
But you've missed my point as well. The tone I'm getting with VST's isn't generic
I said the starting point was.
For example, when I'm looking for a 'new sound' (not something I do much guitar-wise since I'm pretty settled) I might think 'hey, this song I'm about to record is kind've Dolly Parton; I should look for some heavy-f**king-metal grind, like Dolly would use'.
See?
In your case you might be starting from a point where you want a 'screaming wall of painful hell' or a 'bell-like harp of doom' sound, but the starting point is generic.
See?

I almost feel like I built the plugin based amp myself. Starts with a noisgate, then GreaseTube is like a tube OD, it runs into two parallel instances of the SimuAnalog JCM900, one set to chanel a "clean", voiced as close as possible to a Fender with a good amount of breakup (drive about 7.5) , the other instance is more typically Brit sounding, B chanel "drive" set to about 6 where it begins to get gritty with the Danelectro. Then each goes thru it's own tube compressor set to hit just the peaks (ratio is pretty light). Then both JCM900 signals join in the Boogex, which is tweeked for further Fender tone and light breakup (reminds me of poweramp stage)and loaded with a Fender Blackface POD - NO CABINET impulse. Then thru another compressor plug, set to hit just the already compressed peaks again lightly (looking for waveform distortion without clipping here). then through FX. There are no presets used, and nothing is generic (like switching on a bog stock amp, for instance).

See, I play guitar because I like playing guitar, not because I like spending hours tweaking amps. Sure, I have spent hours tweaking amps, but I prefer playing guitar.guitarzan wrote:There are no presets used, and nothing is generic (like switching on a bog stock amp, for instance).
The fact that I can get a sound that I love from a 'stock' amp pleases me immensely.
Also, I think I covered the 'generic' thing above.
Also, if we're talking about generic sounds, I'd say that the 80s metal sound is a 'generic' sound and I'm pretty sure that most of them used guitar rigs that looked like the NASA control rooms!

by repeating "setting up" one gains knowledge, knowledge that will come in handy for as long as you are still picking up a guitar...I have found that one's tone is always evolving...so setting up is an ever changing thing anyhow...guitarzan wrote:With VST's, setup only happens once.
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

With a 'stock' amp, setup happens zero times! The amp is there, all shiny and complete! No soldering required!guitarzan wrote:With VST's, setup only happens once.

Doesn't everybody do this?guitarzan wrote:I see...somehow the mic is permanently affixed on your amp, with a mic pre and everything....cool!
I have an old broom handle sticking out of the front of the cab with a mic bolted to it, and a behringer pre-amp (like Bob Rock uses) duck-taped to my head.

wow I bet you get a lot of strange looks from people with a pre-amp taped to your head...

See this is what I actually meant; I was making 'funny'.Hink wrote:a behringer pre-amp (like Bob Rock uses) duck-taped to my head

Now I realise that 'head' could have meant the amp head, which isn't a 'funny' at all.
[sad face]
To clarify, I have neither a broomstick nor a behringer pre-amp taped to any part of my body or my amp.
I do have an LA2A wedged firmly into my anus, but that's more for pleasure than business...

My choice is NONE.
They just don't do it for me and I've tried just about every amp-modeller available and unfortunately purchased many of them (Amplitube, Guitar Rig, and a POD). My thing is I would rather have one amazing tone with absolutely no versatility whatsoever than thousands of halfway decent tones that I'm ultimately unhappy with.
