im not missing anything, just looking for an alternative (but one that has a very similar work process)
eXT was a pretty intuitive leap for me from Orion, and they work pretty well together. You can toggle step-sequencing style entry in it's piano roll.

I would have upgraded to Live 5 by now had I not heard so many people griping about it..As far as Project 5 goes, :10: seems to do pretty well with it, and he's a beat guy like you, so maybe that's another good choice for you.

Yes, it's simlar. Have to admit that the thing I didn't like was the colour scheme (which is fixed). The pale blue/grey contrast made me dizzy! Also the actual piano image is way too large.

Of course there were other things I didn't like about P5 (I'm not really that shallow!). FOr example, the audio engine is not gapless like Ableton's, and most of the included instruments are very poor (except Dimension of course).

When you first open Live there are some getting started tutorials on the right side of the screen. They are certainly worth spending half an hour of so looking through, because they will answer a surprising number of common questions

don't forget that FL can be a plug-in so you could host it inside Orion

FL can be hosted in FL, Orion, Cubase, Live, Project5, Sonar, Tracktion, Tunafish, eXT, the list goes on. FL can also host Orion, Reason, Rebirth, eXT, the list goes on. ;)

I think Krim just doesn't want FL because I use it :hihi:

I'd also recommend having a play around with live, work your way through the lessons.
I suppose it can be perceived as pattern based, it's certainly a good tool for working with loops.
That's what I liked about it, I could create loops/patterns of whatever length, trigger them via midi, set them to trigger semi-randomly, record the output, consolidate bits of it - set that to loop etc.
It's one of those apps that's fun to play with.
