Tape Effect

Just dled Milli Vinylli and it got me to thinking. Is there anything free out there that will make a track sound like it was recorded on tape? I'd like some tape hiss too, doesn't have to be a single plug though.

I'm pretty sure I'd get better results with a compressor than an EQ. At any rate they're both too much work. Just want a plug that does it more or less automatically, if such a thing exists (would think someone would have done this by now).

Record your music to an old tapedeck and back to the computer and burn you CD.
You can buy a tapedeck secondhand for no money.

I use an older ALR-8 / Fostex 8-track reel to dump my drum trackz and occansionally vocal track from my pc, then back to my pc.
Now, U could do the same, buy just buying say, an older two trk / stereo reel to reel
machine, (say maybe a sony or even a tascam) for next to a couple'a hundred bucks.
It worx, it sound totally LOVELY, when you do this, very phat, very warm, and gives you
the best of both worlds !!!
Otherwise, being you cant afford the machine, 'Magneto' , can do a fairly loose,
immataion of this. So, there ya go.

This might help:

The delays from this guy are also quite nice.

I didn't like wow & flow flutter too much, it's really hard to get the effect to be subtle and it sounds more like modulation. It's not really the developers fault though, because the way VST works there is no way to do REAL vibrato as a plug-in, you could probably find something in the DXi realm that might work better, and then just get a nice tape warmer, I hear PSP Vintage Warmer is superb. If you the DXi thing is a problem (no support) you can cheat by doing something like adding a slight smooth random vibrato lfo to your synth's or sampler's pitch and then running it through a tape compressor. There are a lot of plug-ins that emulate tape saturation quite well.
In my case I use Ohm Boyz tape delay and add a slight random lfo to the delay time.
It's not tape warping, but a really awesome sound is to run a sound through guitar rig, and apply a random lfo to the cabinent distance setting.

Care to explain? Not saying you are wrong of course, I'm just curious...lowercase wrote:...because the way VST works there is no way to do REAL vibrato as a plug-in...

I wish I could remember where I read about it. It was a while ago on a forum here when I was trying to to find a vst vibrato effect. It might have something to do with the way the buffer setup is?
But if you look at izotope vinyl the warp mode for VST is disabled, and also the obvious lack of vibrato plug-ins for VST.
It might be possible, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure most vibrato you will see in VST is just a chorus or flanging effect (although even guitar pedals might do this also), that doesn't spread. I think you have to have vibrato coming from the source other wise you have to actually do a pitch shift.
Can anyone else shed any light on this?
(Izotope vinyl says they disabled warp even on DX, and that your host has to support a certain function, that function they don't say but... think it has something to do with the buffer)

in my opinion in the NomadBlueTube bundle is a god saturator and my favorite is build in the "am-track" compressor in Samplitude8 - Incredible!

If you are going to go to the trouble of recording to real tape > back to your PC - you could also import the .wav into Reason and run it through Scream4's tape algorithm. IMO it sounds incredible.

Total bollocks. Although I suspect the source of this misinformation was the Isotope Vinyl site? I seem to recall they released a VST version that didn't do some of the things that the DX version did - for some reason that doesn't seem at all reasonable. It's not really the developers fault though, because the way VST works there is no way to do REAL vibrato as a plug-in, you could probably find something in the DXi realm that might work better
There are zillions of VST plugins that can do vibrato (frequency modulation) of all sorts. It is the very basis of flanging and chorus. Many flangers can have the wet/dry balance altered to give just vibrato.
Kjaerus Golden Modulator does a good vibrato, with tempo sync, phase offest and choice of waveforms.
