After extansive experimentation and crashing my PC a whole lot of times
I've decided that since I am joining yet another band I'd like to base
my signature sound while performing with this particular outfit on what I
call a "convolver wah"
I've been taking slices of modulating sounds, for this explanation I will
use the example of a panther's roar, and convolving my lead with varying
slices of the sound.
Using a knob or expression pedal or whatever to set what slice of the sample
I'm convolving with is my problem. It's all well & good to arduously set this
up with lots of buses inside my sequencer with multiple instances of one
of the many lovely convolving effect that I've got.
But can anyone tell me if there's an already existing method whereby I can
set the "playback" position of an "impulse" for example a panther's roar,
such that as I turn the knob it goes from one end of the roar to the other, convolving
my lead sound with it?
By the way this method makes some wicked sweet roaring wah-wah.
An angry feline forment wah if you will.
Other successes: slowed-down bat echolocation, otter squeaks, meteorites entering the atmosphere, NASA recording of the ionosphere of Saturn's rings (something I used to
use as a background for sax solos), woodwind multiphonics
Failed experiments: an eggbeater, thunder, liposuction vacuum, Katie Couric's nervous twittering

dunno if that kind of convolution stuff can be done in real-enough time to be useable or live performance, but I know little of such issues. i bet someone will say it's possible with energyXT.
you could try rigging a talkbox-pedal-thingie to a large brass instrument connected to a gas powered motor or some crazy shit like that, if you really want a good live-show gimmick.

(unable to test while I'm at work) but if your convolution tool has a start point(offset), like PristineSpace, couldn't you control that with a midi controller? shorten your length to a few ms and there you go, instant morphing Convolution! in a roundabout kind of way..
I'm going to try it when I get in - in 3.5 hours..

Sounds like something that Kyma would be able to do in a blink of an eye. I havn't experimented with any sample morphing type things yet thus my contributions here are a little useless, but let me know if you do find an effective (and cheap) way to do this!

dang, can't control Offset in PristineSpace with controller - off to the Voxengo forums for a feature request.
maybe kyma is the only option currently, unless there are any other low-latency convolution engines offering control of length and offset.
I'm having fun just convolving beats against fractions of random speech and instrument samples
real-time offset twiddle would be marvellous!

In re: realtime
I worked around that problem by using a wet/dry controller, too.
Since it's just an insert effect I just work around the latency with some things.
I realize the improbability of this most recent scheme. Thought I'd get some opinions, though.
funky lime: lol @ energyXT and I've actually seem someone with an air-powered horn somewhat like you describe at the Sound Unseen (or something like that) festival.
But I never care about visual stuff for myself. Always the sounds.
Then again in the good old days me being a giant with a sax with a mouthpiece mic
running into an analog Conn Octavider for Woodwinds (from the 60's kinda art deco
looking effect that has a belt-hook!) running into a digitech floor rack with expression
controlled delay/phaser/autowah is pretty visually shocking.
Ah, well - back to the drawing board.
If I get it to work smoothly I'll post a sound...
Using a whammy like pedal on vamping while swinging the pedal between 0 and 1/2way rhythmically then suddenly giving a few all-the-way pedal sweeps!
Funky wah panher roar - it's indescribably dope.

I used the lovely phrase "lagomorph-ungulate hybrid" in my friends' briefly-lived rock band. The song also had a lot of Spoonerisms. Did I mention I want a panther wah?

Hmm I've made some headway.vurt wrote:i have a spoon in my pocket.
Using a variety of eq-morphing/copying technique, vocoding & convolution.
It's really odd the way such strange, pointless indeas cycle around
in the back burner of my mind.
The great thing about all the free tools nowadays is that someone who makes no
money like me can still add to the evolution of very strange musical ideas.
I rarely find that I can't technically make some weirdo idea work, though
I basically never have the processor power to fully pull of my cockamamie ideas.

I discovered at the zoo long ago that I can make all the same noises as otters.
One high-pitched sqeak can cause them to cruise around their enclosure counter-clockwise
in a blind rush forward like they're trying to achieve escape velocity.

Not sure if I understand correctly, but why are you after convolution?
Shouldn't a sampler with modulatable loop start/end points do the trick?
