Looking at the Waves site it seems, unless i'm mistaken, that you can buy most of their plug-ins without having to buy one of their larger more expensive packs. Has anyone here bought some this way?
What would be the copy protection on the individual plugs? iLok, password or other?
I've seen many Waves users are angry with the constant payed updates under the WUP scheme, but I would guess individual plugs would be exempt from this scheme?
Im interested in the Q10 eq and Rcompressor in Mac Audio unit format.

*Some* of their plugs are/were available individually, but only a small subset. These days, it's mostly small, large or complete bundles.

Copy protection is the same as everything else. Basically, the Waves software is Waveshell, and the individual plugins sit in a folder and are loaded by Waveshell in your host. Authorisation is the same for any plugin or plugin bundle.

WUP applies to *all* software. If you want the Rencomp, it's cheaper to buy the Musician's Bundle 2 than buying the RenComp standalone I think, and you also get RenVox, RenEQ, Doubler and Supertap, all great plugs.

Edit: RenComp on it's own $200. MB2 (RenComp, RenVox, RenEQ, Doubler, Supertap): $200

The MB2 is a really good deal. (Apart from it's now dongle only, an I suppose if you buy the downloadable version you also have a buy an iLok dongle now as well for another $50 (regardless of the product). Does the non downloadable version include an iLok?

Cheers Beej..
you're right, the Musician bundle 2 does look very good value with all those plugs. I'll have to take a good look at that, but the only thing putting me off is the thought of being tied to some WUP where they'll be continuly sucking money out of me to keep using the plugs...
Would this be the case?
And it looks like I can add the Q10 eq for a further $150 with a download off the Waves site.
I like the Q10 as its pretty straight forward and laid out really nicely. I've had a look at some other eqs (sonalksis) but found it a bit fiddly and also it only has 4 bands of eq..
is there anything else I could look at that is available for Mac AU?

If you want Waves, you are stuck with iLok and Wup unfortunately. You don't *have" to pay for WUP, you get a year free with a purchase, and as long as it works there's no need to WUP any further. I will eventually *have* to, as after my years free WUP ran out, Waves stopped supporting disk authorisations.

This means, if my hard drive or waves installation gets corrupted, in order to reinstall and use my Waves bundle, I will have no choice but to buy a new Wup, buy an iLok, and get Waves to transfer my authorisations onto it.

So you don't need WUP with iLok, as long as the authorisations don't get hosed, and your current versions are supported by software. WUP just gives you 'free' updates and 'free' support, guranteeing your plugins will work with future versions of software. I think the WUP is about 10% per year, so about $20, less/year if you buy more years in one go...

There are plenty of other alternatives - look for Sonalksis, URS and others for great quality AU plugs.

(I really like the Waves bundles - simple, no fuss, does what I need.)

I'm no Mac guy, but you might want to check out Eqium, Hydratone and the Wave Arts stuff, for ease of use, quality and graphical display. URS Bundle is stunning if you have the coin, but no graphical display.

Waves gets my vote, WUP or no WUP - that MB II deal is awesome.
