No shit! Wow, I'm going to do that this weekend with my E-MU card. It's not working properly, maybe I got it too high up!

Not directly related to the original question, but more of an aside about asio4all latency. I might be going a bit mad (I'm fairly new to this digital recording lark), but I can acheive 1ms latency with ASIO4ALL and my crappy AC97 onboard sound card in Fruity Studio when recording audio. No pops/crackles/dropouts...
PC SPECS:
AMD AthlonXP2800+/512MB RAM/AC'97
ASIO4ALL Settings:
Buffer Size: 64 Samples
Latency Compensation: IN 0ms/OUT 0ms
Kernal Buffers: 3
Always resample 44.1<>48
Force WDM driver to 16 bit
CPU does reach 100% at times (with many other VSTi channels/FX etc), but it doesnt seem to have any adverse effects.
Have I just hit the "lucky-jackpot"?
(and *yes*, of course I need to upgrade from this horrible AC97 rubbish
)

Dude, that's insane. My E-MU has to be at at least 20ms to avoid popping.Numinor wrote:Not directly related to the original question, but more of an aside about asio4all latency. bduffy, just today (because of being corrected by the ASIO4ALL developer) I tried the latest version (2.6) and used it for Guitar Rig 2, along with Rig Kontrol 2. Now, the lowest I can go for with the "native" ASIO drivers of the RK is 2ms (4ms in total), without an option to switch on "high resolution" (getting crackles then). With the ASIO4ALL driver I can get to 3ms in total AND switch to high resolution.
CPU useage is a bit higher, but at least it's working fine. Guess I should get to the same performance in case I use more or less equal settings.
There's still a slight recording offset, but probably there's some ways to sort that out as well, will run some more specific tests (also involving other cards) over the weekend.
However, seems as if in some cases ASIO4ALL is even worth trying if your card comes with dedicated ASIO drivers allready.

Thanks, Sascha. I think I've tried ASIO4ALL already with lightly disastrous results, but I might try it again. I use the ASIO4ALL driver at work with the Darla24 instead of the shit Echo drivers, and it results in smoother performance, but occasioal crashes. I'd hate to not use the proper drivers, as the E-MU features are really cool, and a recording offset is unacceptable. But I'll try it out, thanks.Sascha Franck wrote:bduffy, just today (because of being corrected by the ASIO4ALL developer) I tried the latest version (2.6) and used it for Guitar Rig 2, along with Rig Kontrol 2. I think the latest ASIO4ALL version is seriously improved, especially as it seems to offer some setting finally adressing the recording offset, and even that might not be required for certain cards. Not sure though. As said, will do some more scientific tests the next days.
Btw, I don't think you'll lose any of the EMU features in case you "wrap" it into ASIO4ALL.

Yeah, I'm just not sure how the E-MU Patchmix console would interact with ASIO4ALL. To use ASIO with the Patchmix, you have to "send" your inputs to an ASIO input - I think it's actually exactly the same as the KxDrivers, but sweetly GUI'd! Anyway, don't know if ASIO4ALL will mess with this.Sascha Franck wrote:I think the latest ASIO4ALL version is seriously improved, especially as it seems to offer some setting finally adressing the recording offset, and even that might not be required for certain cards. You got me curious, I'll try it when I get home. There's something depressing about not being able to use the proprietary drivers for a good, high-quality card. I swear PC's are getting more difficult to make music on.

Perhaps we should all get Amigas and and record in 8bit/22050hzbduffy wrote:I swear PC's are getting more difficult to make music on.
Back to my original post about my super-flukey 1ms latency with ASIO4ALL/AC97, I feel truely blessed, and I would also highly recommend giving it a shot over any proprietry drivers, just to see if it improves performance.
Completely off topic now, but I feel I need to say it

Defenitely secondend.Numinor wrote: Completely off topic now, but I feel I need to say it- These forums are simply fabulous. Plenty of knowledgable ppls here happy to help without a hint of ego. Just as it should be... (or have I not been here long enough to see the egos on display? hehe). Hell - I got a question answered in a matter of minutes in another post!
Much props to all posters/admin on creating a fantastic computer music resource. Thanx! I guess you wont be getting rid of me easily
If you are into digital audio, this is one of *the* places. The mixture of people is just right, freedom of speech is almost always given (well, sure, there's some folks abusing it...) and questions, be it about host tricks, theory (both musical and technical), hardware stuff such as computer configurations and several things more are all answered within a day or so.
Let's not forget you can find some fine musicians here as well, some of them gladly willing to collaborate over the net.
Oh well, you can find information about plugins here as well
