h8tracker is pretty unknown.

I'll throw in Jeskola Buzz
http://www.BuzzMachines.com
The price is right and I love the modular interface, I just wish there was a piano roll (although the step sequencer isn't that bad.)

After resisting trackers for a while, I downloaded Psycle, and have been pretty impressed. Actually, the native synths sound very good, and after complaining about it for years, I'm starting to like the tracker interface. No carpal tunneling from holding down the mouse button and trying to draw notes. Like all free stuff, there are some limitations, but it does what it does pretty well and is still being developed.

I downloaded Buzz and, after having an initial bit of fun with it, it keeps crashing as soon as I load it. It seems very unstable. Lots and lots of stuff to play with though. From what I've read, the source code was lost. It would be nice if someone could pick it up and fix it, but that doesn't seem like it's going to happen.

I didn't know that about Buzz's source. That's really too bad (glad I back my stuff up.) As far as the stability, I agree. I had to run it in Windows NT 4.0 compatibility mode (I'm using XP)

If you are interested in trackers, I would reccomend that you give renoise a whirl. The best of them at the mo IMO.

Psycle is great.
Like Goldbaker said it has lots of good synths built in,and plenty usefull effects too.
The stability seems good too wich IMO puts it above Buzz.
Very low cpu if you use the internal generators.

Thanks for the link. It looks like buzzle's not done yet? Have you tried it? Looks interesting.

Downloading BuzzLE now.I'll have to test it out later.
Perhaps Buzz is'nt finished after all.Looks like a nice rewrite of Buzz.

Jazz++ is a MIDI sequencer, but it's a long way from a full-up host. It was open-sourced a while back but as best I can tell there hasn't been any real work done on it for a long time.

I used it for a while, driving a GM keyboard that I recorded into my old Fostex 4-track, but have since moved on to "bigger and better" things. It definitely had some neat capabilities, especially the "random rhythm generator".

Modplug tracker... and i'm hoping to be able to make a VST version of modplug tracker.... a vst that is a host tracker, sample/instrument editor, wav/mp3 renderer etc.... I love the hex based tracker... it's so great for crazy experiments... peace, (i've used gungirl... it's pretty simple, but GREAT!!!)
