Got any suggestions? I need a reliable ADSR module that I can load at the end of an FX chain in order to shape the envelope of that signal. I have a killer sound created using a number of different synths combined, but need to treat them as one big synth at the output bus.

Free or pay, doesn't matter.

Hi

I've thought on this before

Mono signals are easy enough but Poly would get all messed up if it were controlled by the original synth note MIDI. What I might suggest is that you use a second MIDI channel to trigger the ADSR so then you are contouring the sound as a whole. Hope this makes sense.

If there are no other takers I should be able to make you something in SE.

Not really an ADSR, but you might want to try dfx MIDI gater. The Slope parameter gives you at least some control over attack/release.

If you're on Mac, there's an ADSR plugin in the Pluggo collection.

It's mostly the attacks that I want control over. I'll explain in more detail here so the goal will make sense:

I have a lead sound that derives its main body from two synths. There is a third VST instrument that has a feedback/harmonic squeal component that I want to control via a joystick so that I can be sustaining a note and introduce that feedback in a smooth way.

Additionally, one of the main synths is supplying more of an attack than the other which I sometimes want, but mostly don't want. So my plan is to use another toggle control (on the same joystick) to flip that on/off.

At the end of the chain, I want to have a final stage of shaping over the attack (for cool swells and staccato emphasis). That's were the other ADSR comes in. I want it to affect the entire sound after the FX processing and it will be controlled by other real-time controls in addition to the ones I've mentioned. So a MIDI based solution won't work because much of the character of this hybrid sound I have is a result of everthing in the soup hitting the same mix bus.

The ultimate goal is to have a very expressive lead sound that is part wailing guitar, part flute, and with a bit of physical-modeling going on in the body of each note.

Sounds like you need an envelope follower.

I tried CamelPhatPro, but it wasn't quite cutting it. Colored the rest of the sound too much.

I'll keep looking. I think I'll end up cobbling this together in eXT.

If it is indeed an envelope follower you need, you can try this one http://www.kvraudio.com/get/785.html .

sorry if this is out of the field,
couldn't you use the fruity envelope controller linked to the volume of a channel?

Thanks guys! There were more replies here than I was able to get to quickly, so please don't feel overlooked in my gratitude. I was paging through a number of things at the same time, too. I am truly grateful for the help and will report my results back to this thread once I have a chance to really experiment.

I think I may have found a start of the solution for me. UGO's String Theory 1.5 has a post ADR section in it. So within eXT (withing FLS), I'm going to be able to set up my monster (part of my problem before was that I was using FL Slayer which cannot be loaded into eXT). God bless UGO and that synth. With some cabinet emulation, a smooth distortion unit, and at the end of the chain a nice crunching by Voxengo Marquis, I may just have come up with the ultimate Ztar-cum-HendrixFeedback instrument that also sounds meaner than Nile when in the low cello range. I love technology.

Here's the current state of it. This isn't meant to be musical, just to show how the feedback is alive and feels great while you're playing it. The next step will be to get the distortion level slaved to something in real-time so I can back off of it for more riffy parts. I'm really trying to make a hybrid guitar-synth doom sound.

I was going to suggest a sampler with layers you could control seperatly. That way a simple copy paste for the adsr when you want the same effect with volume for the feedback sound. But it sounds like you aced the test.

OK, here's an update. Much more control now over the feedback. This is all real-time manipulation of the sound...

The next step will be to figure out the smartest way to configure the gain structure between the four synths as there is one that is supplying a ghostly overtone thing that I'd like to be able to exclude on some sustained notes and exaggerate radically on others, with there being a seamless transition between off/on-standard/on-radical.

What I really need is three MIDI trumpet valves that I could mount on my Ztar. Then I could crossfade between three parameters in real time and do it much more rhythmically than with a joystick.

If only I could get real guitar like vibrato with my left hand like on a guitar. ATM I'm using the joystick for that which hijacks that whole hand during the process.
